Deliver Us From Evil Reviews
Deliver Us From Evil does what it says on the tin and provides a straightforward genre piece.

Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us From Evil comes across and is masked as a paranormal horror film, but really it’s more of a crime drama about a man who has his own demons...
| Original Score: B | Aug 19, 2024
Deliver us from Evil is quite a good horror movie, though it falls short of anything like greatness. It has a fantastic cast anchored by the aforementioned Bana and Joel McHale, and features some truly grotesque imagery and tense situations.

Formulaic storytelling and glaring plot holes plague a film that tries to balance horror and cop procedural tropes into a half-hearted meditation on Christian faith.

One man's "Putting the Hell in the movie-going experience" is, well, another man's slightly different same.

Combining things that go bump in the night with graphic gore, it's a brooding if not exactly riveting ride soundtracked by The Doors as the spirits try to 'Break On Through'.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 26, 2021
The thing that really sinks the movie's momentum aren't the stock characters or lack of new thrills but the exposition scenes that explain the obvious.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Feb 1, 2021
It has some nice qualities and a pretty good climactic scene, but the use of well-known formulas and an uneven tone prevents it from being anything more than just ... what it is.

Powerful is an understatement. Deliver Us from Evil is a fully sensory and terrifying experience capped off with a spellbinding performance by Edgar Ramirez.

It's hard not to want to avert your eyes and that makes up, marginally, for the otherwise clichéd screenplay.

[Director Scott Derrickson] arrives well-equipped with an intuitive sense of genre-specific trickery, yet this heavily derivative psychological horror ultimately fails to add depth and character to a disappointing mélange of predictable jumps and scares.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 3, 2019
Derrickson fails to convince us that his film is anything more than a run-of-the-mill creep show, but at the very least it delivers scares aplenty.

Deliver us from Evil offers too much of the same thing... may future horror films deliver us from the evils of repetitiveness.

Director Scott Derrickson... gets the mood right and builds some suspense. Unfortunately, it leads to a rather pedestrian finish that feels like reheated leftovers from much better films.

Deliver Us from Evil is an okay way to get a few shivers to combat the summer heat. It's derivative and doesn't totally hang together, but it gets the job done.

Overall, I recommend it, you may not find it frightening but I'm pretty sure you will be entertained.

... if you are looking for a few screams, jumps and subsequent spillage of popcorn then you could do a lot worse than go and see this movie.

I will say that there are some genuinely creepy scenes in the film. It is clear that there were a lot of great, unconnected ideas behind the film, but unfortunately all of these sincere scares got strung together without much context.

Derrickson has something important to say. He just needs to learn not to say it.

While it isn't in the league of, say, Insidious or The Ring, Deliver Us From Evil packs in a mixed bag of thrills that is, at times, deeply disturbing by virtue of using the kind of horror tropes that are more psychological than gory.
