Digging for Fire Reviews
Why is this listed as a Thriller? It's a snooze fest, nothing thrilling about it whatsoever
A slight returning to the well for director Joe Swanberg in that this movie does a very similar thing to his movie Drinking Buddies. It addresses the subtle cracks in relationships that continue to expand over time. Unfortunately, by comparison Digging for Fire feels mundane and almost useless. It has a great ensemble cast but they have nothing to do and certainly very little that is interesting to say. It feels pretty manufactured despite its core messages being fairly resounding.
I liked the vibe and the cast, but it's not that cohesive of a movie and certainly not a "mystery/thriller" as it is listed here. It's more of a light indie comedy/drama.
Not sure why this scored so low on Rotten Tomatoes... feel like i saw a different movie to whoever scored it low? It's a great indie, was unpredictable, some funny bits, felt very real and honest. It's not trying to be anything. An intriguing story about a certain point in your life when you're young parents and trying to figure out your life - which I'm leading up to now, so maybe that's why i related and got so much from it. In a nut shell: About relationships yet about individuals; Fun yet serious; Comedic yet emotional; Adventurous yet down to earth.
Nothing interesting going on and the entire cast has nothing to do. A completely forgettable film.
It was a great movie but the first 25 minutes was unnecessary I think. Also why didn't the wife confess at the end of the movie? That's messed up! I didnt like the ending bc of that.
Swanberg seems to have a found the perfect formula for making an indie film. Good cast + good script + good camerawork + good editing = good movie. Digging for Fire is a elegant tale of marriage and the struggles of identifying who are as we all inevitably change. Its pretty good.
what a fucking waste of time. i watched it only becuase Orlando Bloom was in it back when i was in that fanclub. and wow what is this movie even about? nothing made any sense and it bored me half to death
Strengths: I keep watching Joe Swanberg movies, mostly because of the casts he puts together. Jake Johnson (Tim), Anna Kendrick (Alicia), Brie Larson (Max), and Orlando Bloom (Ben) are all people I mostly enjoy. Rosemarie Dewitt (Lee) was also pretty solid as the wife here. I liked how the story moved back and forth between Lee and Tim, giving each enough time to build a story, without staying in one place to long. I did really enjoy the simultaneous "dates" of sorts between Tim/Max and Lee/Ben. Weaknesses: Though he always has a great cast, Swanberg movies never fully click with me. There's a slowness about them that loses me at points. It feels very similar to his other movies, which is understandable, but they're all too familiar by this point. I also felt that some of the cast was underutilized. Kendrick is usually great in his films, but she barely had anything to work with here. And again, a Swanberg comedy film mostly fails to make me laugh. It's disappointing. Overall: Like every other Joe Swanberg picture I've seen, this one lacks a lot. It has all the ingredients to stand out, especially with the cast, but really just misses the mark for the most part. There's a good story in there, it just doesn't get done in the best possible way.
I love Joe Swanberg's work, because he seems to understand the importance of the truth in a human moment; whether that moment be a literal second in time, or a period in someone's life. This is a beautiful story, powered by compassionate direction and strong performances, about marriage, love, maturity, impatience, procrastination, growth, and realization of self. Some of Swanberg's finest work.
This is the third mundane comedy I've seen this week. The quality of movies has clearly decreased especially when it comes to comedies. Digging For Fire was so boring, barely funny, and completely pointless.
Another good movie from Joe Swanberg. He's a master of mumblecore, movies that are more about the weird conversations than the plot. An interesting cast has some fun conversations. I enjoyed it.
Yet another star-studded, light mumblecore comedy from writer-director Joe Swanberg. There is no clear narrative structure and it's certainly not a groundbreaking film, but it is gracefully crafted and emotionally satisfying at the end. Digging for Fire is a neat little dramedy.
As a film translator I've come to realize that the average movie maker of the past two decades possesses intelligence, logic and imagination of a heavily drugged mentally challenged chimp. But this piece of art must have been made by a creature whose intelligence ranks somewhere between smoked fish and mushroom.
The movie was good-not terrific- it didn't really resolve the body in the garden plot line very well- and the possible dual cheating plot line also fell flat- The highlight of the movie was Orlando Bloom's performance but his contribution was not utilized more. It would have had a higher rating if he had been.
