Dirt Music Reviews
Garrett Hedlund looks like a fourth Hemsworth, sun-bleached hair and dreamy eyes. He has the harder role, skirting between misery and a deeper layer of misery.

A beautiful bore.

Dirt Music has few pleasures to recommend it, and even with a relatively lean running time of an hour and 45 minutes, it limps to an unexciting conclusion with the pace of an injured snail.

It isn't a great romantic movie, but it's certainly one of the best-looking. Despite that, it's still an overly pompous and self-indulgent melodrama. [Full review in Spanish]

Despite being based on the best seller of the same name from well-renowned author Tim Winton, the cinematic adaptation doesn't really compliment the novel. It feels as if you could read the book quicker than getting through the film.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 23, 2021
Risibly far-fetched, contrived and unoriginal.

Dirt Music" suffers from a lack of rhythm and a not very elaborate plot.

Trades in melodrama while Macdonald and Hedlund are playing it straight. Both are bound by grief but the very thing that connects them feels at odds with the film's over-dramatic edge.

"Dirt Music" is a film that begs to explore race, environmental impacts of working-class pursuits, and the law's reflex to "look the other way" to influential power brokers...melodramatic romance at the core has the loudest voice.

While not exactly a terrible film, definitely a dull film.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 17, 2020
Dirt Music wants to elicit an emotional reaction but it fails to do so.

This is a very handsome film that takes full advantage of the land- and seascapes it's set on.

The vibe is a Nicholas Sparks adaptation with an outback twist, though Jordan was obviously shooting for profundity and visual lyricism

He's not an impossible author to film, but a challenging one to translate from page to screen.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 7, 2020
While it plays out against the glories of the Dampier Peninsula, the splendors of the backdrop can't make up for the fact events in the foreground are failing to make sense.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 7, 2020
There's beauty to be seen constantly, but the surface-level attractiveness is unable to distract its audience from the story's lack of depth.

...there are some things that happen near the end that are inexplicable in the rational universe. Sometimes, love too, is a miracle.

Dirt Music is a perfect postcard promotion image for Western Australia, and while it has its fair share of stumbles (...) there is still an undeniable emotional truth to the film that resonates long and loud.

...as a film, Dirt Music leaves us stuck in the mud.

So much of Dirt Music feels like it happens on the fringes of a more interesting narrative.
