Down With Love Reviews

So cute! Must see I don’t know why I never heard of this film before 2025

Worth watching for the nostalgic 60s design. Casting is not perfect though...

This movie has a great cast. Ewan McGregor didn’t seem the best choice for his role, but overall the movie has a great cast. The cinematography is visually stunning, capturing the beauty of the setting. The story just doesn’t hit the mark. In great part, because the story is made of actions that are done and then undone. The movie doesn’t really go anywhere. When we believe the movie is headed in a particular direction, something occurs to reveal that it’s not truly meant to go anywhere. It’s fine if this movie is supposed to be a parody of old movies, but it doesn’t work very well. It’s a waste of talent - and frankly a bit of waste of time.

I saw this movie years back, and even though I’d forgotten most of it, it never left my mind as having left a positive impression. Upon the second watch, I can acknowledge that it even surpassed my expectations. Down With Love is well-written from start to finish; the plot, the dialogue, the quips, the numbers, the wittiness, the scrupulousness… It all blends together with magnificent cinematography and amazing performances that are reminiscent of a Doris Day, Rock Hudson, and Tony Randall movie. Renée Zellweger could very much compare to Doris Day, while Ewan McGregor’s character acts just like a Rock Hudson character would. David Hyde Pierce was the perfect choice for the quirky sidekick, like Tony Randall back in the days, and above all we get a cameo from Randall himself. This rom-com set in the 60s is as good as rom-coms were back in that era. Forget La La Land and Barbie, this one here tops both of them combined.

This movie is so amazing and entrancing! I cannot stop thinking about it since the first time I watched it. I am so obsessed. This movie is way better than Barbie (2023) and it deserves a resurgence of attention!

The retro aesthetic of the 60s is beautiful and well portrayed, but the script is cliché and predictable, there is a sloppiness in the development of the battle of the sexes, in addition, the main purpose and the ending are crude.

So Much Fun! The cast is having a ball Renee kills it!

It is not quite sure if it wants to parody of classic romcoms or BE one, but it is fun.

The best movie title sequence ever made!

I thought it was ridiculous! They borrowed so many things from the Rock and Doris movies. Back then we loved them. But now they seem totally outdated. I always rate a movie by the fact that I would watch it again. That would be pure torture! And Renee's faces that she makes and her exaggerated walk were hard to take. Sorry.

Cute movie but I think Ewan should've been casted with someone else instead of Zellweger. I don't hate her but her acting wasn't the best in this. Her walk actually made me want to puke. Sarah was absolute perfection as always. The movie was cute but it needed more love in it for me to say wow. I get what the director was doing but it was lacking in a lot of areas.

2.8 I liked the style

This film is a masterclass in how camp most common to theatre productions can translate to film when done well. There is nothing superfluous in the film-all of the acting, sets, costumes, music, and sound effects to hit all the right beats, bringing out the best out of this talented cast. Sarah Paulson and David Hyde Pierce steal the show with their impeccable comedic delivery and chemistry. The two leads also demonstrate a keen wielding of the genre, and nail the choreography of the piece as whole. The tone tastefully elevates the bombastic series of entertaining plot twists, and tempers the strikingly thoughtful and insightful social commentary. A must see!

I loved this movie. It is totally charming and I love the way they have used the old fashioned theme throughout, old style sets and costuming. McGregor is absolutely gorgeous, for a change, and Zellweger leads a story with a twist in the end. The casting works well and Hyde-Pierce and Paulson are hilarious and important supporting characters. You go get your man, girl!! Uplifting, cheeky and funny.

The sets and costumes are fun. Renee and Luke Skywalker are easy on the eyes. But the rest sucks.

One of the absolutely best love-comedy movies. Genius, you do not want to miss this one.

Loud colours. Cheap insulting jokes. Cheesy set. Cartoonish production and costume designing. And one of my favourite love stories. Down With Love This could be my favourite outing that resides in the director Peyton Reed's world or filmography. And mind you Peyton Reed gave us Marvel's light hearted superhero and still this film remains to be the one that feels "out of this world". It is one of those films that will stay with you for weeks. Popping on your hand like some jewellery piece that you saw by the window and can't wait to buy. It grabs you by your collar and rattles your body like a puppet until you fall merrily to the set rules by the maker. The film feels extremely simple and it goes to tremendous lengths to prove its simplicity. And how binary can it make your life. And even while doing so, even while weaving out various complicated theories and set pieces, it never gets difficult to swallow. "Don't close your eyes" is what's order around Ewan McGregor playing a powerful name in the city and "Open your eyes" is what's whispered around Renee Zellweger who's humility is catching on fire. This balance of two different worlds is euphorically attractive. You cannot not love the way these guys talk. The conversations are incredibly funny and wrong. Deliberately wrong. It is important you figure that out quickly. You should be aware of the kind of jokes that cheers up the makers. And it is not the properties, characteristics of the characters nor the situational humor that fits in on the narration. Things should rhyme and remain symmetric, no matter what the circumstances are. Now this is the subtexted ongoing joke in the film. You better get ready to follow this system or this is going to be a bad day for you. Down With Love never goes down, actually. You'd think that it would be a disadvantage. You are wrong.

I didn't expect to fall in love with a movie tonight, but ironically enough, it happened with Down with Love. I can't believe this movie isn't a bigger cult classic. If you're a fan of Renée Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, and/or director Peyton Reed (Ant-Man), you need to hunt this one down A.S.A.P.
