Dreamgirls Reviews

Every time I see this movie it brings me to tears with the amazing performance from both Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé. The vocals are amazing and the plot although is a little flawed is believable and based loosely on a true story of Diana Ross and the supremes. Hudson was amazing and well worth the ocar she got for her role. Have to say the acting from Eddie Murphy was impeccable,

Turned it off half way through. Did not like the music (which is nothing like the 60's music that the story is about). The film is tedious, and boring, despite the cast.

I've loved this movie since I was 6 years old. This has always been a favorite for me and the casting was top notch. Must see for EVERYONE. Shoutout to JHud, Beyoncé, Anika, J.Foxx, Eddie, Sharon, and Keith for making this movie what it is!

Fantastic soundtrack

Obviously the songs are great and they lead to some truly memorable scenes (the stage musical is a classic for a reason) but overall this plays like a typical biopic stuck on montage mode for most of the movie.

Superficial characters and plot, and the operetta-to-musical moments are kind of awkward, but the performances are powerful!

eu simplesmente amo esse musical, é o meu favorito.

Beyoncé was decent in this. Everyone else? Not so much.

This is the best musical film! No other musical so seamlessly, authentically weaves the songs into the story without missing a beat. Amazing acting, supreme talent by the entire cast. Wow! I am blown away. No others compare. Bravo!!!

The actresses in this film are very talented singers, but if you're expecting to see a drama that is straightforward, and based on the life of Diana Ross as well as the Supremes, this movie is not it. It is a highly fictionalized musical and the numbers, while stunning, border on cartoonish and take you out of the story. This film, like The Wiz, which Diana Ross herself actually starred in, was better left as a Broadway musical. I honestly don't know how on Earth it won Oscars, because all of the numbers pull you right out of the story and it's extremely distracting. I'm glad I rented it first before buying. I am a lifelong Supremes fan, who was born in the early '80s, and this is not the serious biopic that I wanted.

Good story. Great music. Fun movie.

The best acting performance from Jennifer Hudson! With the best movie songs ever sung: And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going and Listen! And the best sound mixing ever done in a movie!

Excellent acting performances! Just way too much singing dialogue though even for a musical! Some incredible music acts though and Dreamgirls kept my interest up and even though I am not typically a big fan of any musicals. Jamie Foxx played an ass producer well!

This is visually quite a bright film - the glitz and glamour of the music industry and the pop charts side of it at the time it's set in (the 1960s) in particular. However, it does do a good job of highlighting social issues which were prevalent at the time. The cast does a decent job and the songs are catchy and enjoyable for the most part., although if your not keen on wailing vocals (a la Whitney Houston and Celine Dion) then the music may well get on your nerves a little (that's a personal preference thing though). I thought it was a good film overall and I would recommend it, I suppose, as a musical drama - more of a music-based drama than a musical but very much a drama with numerous live performances featured in it.

The weirdest thing about Dreamgirls is that John Krasinski shows up for like one minute more than an hour and a half in, and is never heard from again. You're left wondering if you imagined him being there. Dreamgirls is a solid film from the perspective of representation as one of the highest-profile projects to feature an African-American cast, but as an adaptation it feels like a topheavy series of well-executed musical numbers that skirts narrative or character depth to jam one more song in the album release. The narrative, when it springs up from between the music like a plant growing through a crack in the sidewalk, feels rather tame and melodramatic; there isn't any power behind the events of the film or real empathy for the characters. Instead, Dreamgirls coasts by on the strength of the songs (which range from unnecessary to solid) and the vocal performances, the latter of which is the film's real source of entertainment value; Hudson is the film's greatest star but finds solid company in Beyoncé (no surprise) and Murphy (some surprise, though the film forgets about him anyway). Lots of talented singers, too many songs for a film version. (2/5)

Aside from the superb cast, which also results in vibrant musical performances, the movie shows great awareness in the societal and political climate surrounding the time it was set in, which gives it an image of maturity, especially that it doesn't romanticize the situation as is usually the case, and integrates related events in a seamless way without drifting away from its essence. Dreamgirls however is overly saturated with numbers; it is true that this is what one would expect from a musical, no less so one that started on Broadway, but when it comes to the big screen some scenes would just do without them, especially when there are no on-stage performances and more so when there are supposedly sad scenes. All in all it's a generally enjoyable movie despite the mediocre plot, but that's not why you would be watching anyway.
