Dudley Do-Right Reviews
Oh my god was this movie bad. Everyone always talks about how bad the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie is (which I love) but this is SO much worse. And how this got made before the other is beyond me.
This movie was actually pretty funny. Sure, it's dumb, but yall need to lighten up. It's not at all a serious movie.
An odd choice for a live-action adaptation, Dudley Do-Right is clearly trying to recapture what worked in the George of the Jungle movie but, aside from a scene-stealing Alfred Molina and a cartoon preceding the movie that's much funnier, its humour trying too hard to appeal to both audiences, unfocused plot and the jokes falling flat most of the time - the very short runtime doesn't help - shows that not every cartoon that had 15 minutes of fame needs to turn their protagonists into real boys and girls (or alternatively, glorified cosplay)...Molina does give it some "so bad, it's good" entertainment value.
There had been a fad in Hollywood decades ago for making live-action versions of old television cartoons. None really worked, but this one has done more badly than the others. Of course, it didn't help that Dudley Do-Right cartoons were invariably shorts, rather ones that beget complicated situations. The cartoon had the premise of a strong and handsome but dense hero doing battle against the villain Snidely Whiplash, succeeding in the end when he finally uses his head. (One episode has him fooling Snidely into thinking some dynamite exploded when it didn't because he tricked him using a recording of an explosion-but Dudley had failed to defuse the real dynamite.) So what happens here? Snidely starts a fake gold rush, and Dudley eventually foils his plans. This could have been the basis of something good, but a confusing and unfunny story, ethnic stereotypes, and performers who don't correspond very well to their cartoon equivalents make this a bad movie. Even Dudley Do-Right completists should stay away.
What the heck? SMH. If you don't like a character write a column about how you don't like the character. Don't write a full length movie that displays your loathing of said character. They should give a prize to anyone who can get through 20 minutes of this garbage.
Fraser is a great pick but the script is hit or miss.
Brendan Fraser has a career with odd choices and this film is a prime example. The silly child like humour appears to be aiming for the George of the Jungle crowd but the storyline is a gigantic mess. The film was a huge box office bomb and it's easy to see why, my first question is how the hell did they spend 70 million on this film? At no stage can you see the value on the screen, it looks like everybody loaded their pockets and phoned it in. The narration is utterly useless and uninspiring, why they kept this is beyond me. The whole idea of this film is crazy and you can see why this film failed. Who was the audience of this film? They don't appear to be aiming strictly at children but the humour is low brow, so immature that it's tough yo watch. They needed more pulp humour and a more focused director in charge, massive disappointment. 10-11-2017.
I like the film. It is a film I enjoy for it's jokes and great punchlines. It has great scenes that are just ridiculously stupid but hilarious. Like "Meanwhile at Snidley's not so secret hideout." DD "Dorris Day" "That's not fair! They've got Rocks! All we have is machine guns." I think if this film fails it is because Dudley is not well done as far as presenting him or others as a Canadian Mounty or Dudley's girl friend is not well done in the acting. The Native Americans were presented as an insult rather than jokes that did not miss represent there characters culture. I do think that Snidely Whiplash was the best developed and portrayed character through out the film.
I liked the cartoon about the "Phox" in the beginning. Apparently it was a "Fractured Fairytale". Other than that, there's nothing to see here...move along.
The part of Dudley Do Right played by Brendan Frasier is one of the best comedy roles I've seen in along time! I have this DVD!
