Edge of the World Reviews
A rare bird, not because of what it's like but because it makes you ask: why was it made? [Full review in Spanish]

Despite the best efforts of the cast, Edge of the World rarely rises above a surface-level exploration of an iconoclastic, non-traditional English adventurer.

The film [is] an unbalanced mix of narrative clichés and simplistic action-adventure dramatics that proves absolutely enervating.

The protagonist here is a mindful one that contrarily presents respectful intentions, and that's rare across the usually negative gamut of colonization stories.

Nevertheless, it is beautifully shot in authentic locations, and Meyers's Apocalypse Now-like narration illuminates Brooke's struggle to balance the staggering beauty and the bloody savagery of his private kingdom.

This isn't as exciting as the classic film adaptations of those books, but it does take you down the river and into a place of the unknown.

Edge of the World might work as an ode to bygone swashbuckling classics, but Brooke deserves a much more nuanced biopic.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 14, 2021
We can only sigh about its potential.
| Original Score: C+ | Jun 10, 2021
Less a rollicking action film than it is an adventure of the spirit.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 8, 2021
Less nuanced and complex than Brooke's Wikipedia entry.

At long last, Sir James Brooke finally gets his due on film. And it really is a terrific film.

A misguided journey about ambitious 1880s explorer Sir James Brooke - the first Englismen to be anointed the rajah of Sarawak in Borneo, "Edge of the World" briefly touches the surface of who this man was and what his legacy ended up being.
| Original Score: C- | Jun 5, 2021
Directed with visual flair, it settles into a compelling character study that also offers a broader examination of Victorian-era colonialism.

While it might not knock it out of the park, "Edge of the World" is still a very solid watch if a little slow-going and might also just inspire you to revisit some of the classics its indebted to which is its own small triumph.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 5, 2021
Lushly picturesque if not quite epic in scale, the film nonetheless gets more grandiosely silly as the weight of heroism grows heavier on this puny figure's shoulders, 'til you're laughing at the shameless gall.

Some of the dialogue - the narration in particular - is so leaden with ridiculously overdramatized claptrap that it plays almost like a farce, despite the history speaking for itself.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 4, 2021
If you are looking for phenomenal jungle footage and an evening of analyzing the personal conflict of colonization, Edge of the World is a solid watch.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jun 4, 2021
Edge of the World skims over its history and winds up an empty shell, nice to look at but devoid of content.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 4, 2021
There's undoubtedly a great film to be made of the life of Sir James Brooke, the Englishman who in the early 19th century schemed and fought his way into ruling a good chunk of the island nation of Borneo. Alas, Edge of the World isn't that movie.
| Original Score: C- | Jun 4, 2021
Its exotic, violent, colourful, visually beautiful and a powerful indictment of British imperialism.
