Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable Reviews
With this slickly produced 70-minute standup special, Netflix continues its glittering and sometimes subversive lineup of smart, kooky comedy.

In Relatable, Ellen DeGeneres struggles to regain the edge that she has lost in that intervening time...In defending Hart without any sort of thoughtful inquiry, DeGeneres abdicated her responsibility to her audience.

I just wish she gave us more of her own visceral humanness and trusted us to receive her with a little more darkness than her brand typically allows for.

Relatable is the work of an entertainer who has given herself permission: to admit just how awful it felt to be rejected by people she loves because of who she is; to complain about being asked to dance wherever she goes; to not be relatable.

It also makes her more real to everyone - to her fans and anyone else who has an immutable notion of who she is without taking into account the expectation of who we expect her to be.

This special is damn delightful.

All relatable stuff. If not out-and-out gut-busting or thought-provoking. Does comedy necessarily have to be either of those, though? Can't funny just be funny?

However un-relatable DeGeneres might claim to be, her special feels like a joyous invitation; perhaps the next one won't take 15 years to arrive.

It's goofy, and if there's an edge underneath DeGeneres's frustration with the complaint that she may no longer be relatable, it's buried deep.

Most of the time "Relatable" has the feeling of catching up with DeGeneres. She's been through some lows, and is now high on the perch of success, but we have a good time listening to her share all about it.

As refreshing as it is to hear DeGeneres open up in a more nakedly honest way than we are used to seeing, she's at her purest comedically in the special when she returns to the type of observational humor that made her famous in the first place.

Irony wins and Ellen rules. Fury has had nothing to do with DeGeneres' triumph or enduring appeal.

After all this time away from the stage, Relatable [is] a promising new beginning for an old pro.
