Enemy Reviews
Too many questions left unanswered but Jake was good in this, he was able to make me believe there were two different men there, even though in the end you really don't know if there was one or two.
Enemy is one of those films that’s more interesting than fun to watch. Gyllenhaal’s on great form (twice over), and Villeneuve’s direction is slick and moody as ever. I was into the whole theme of self-sabotage—how bad decisions come back to bite—but it’s definitely more of a thinker than a thriller. The final scene is meant to rattle you, but it didn’t do much for me, mainly because that kind of thing doesn’t freak me out. I know loads of people who’d hate it, though. It's not a bad watch; it's just not one I’d be in a hurry to revisit.
Total rubbish, slow, undermining and severely unsatisfying. You work very hard to find explanations but a spider does not cut it.
- Spoiler Alerts - What a snoozer. They should have spent less of their budget on cepia toning all the footage and more on spicing up the plot. So what the look like each other. Talk about handling it awkardly. And how does the actor one find out where the teacher one lives? Why take the teacher one's gf for a night out of town...how does that avenge or even anything out? I kept waiting for this to go somewhere and then BAM! Abrupt no-meaning confusing BS ending. No wonder I never remember this movie releasing. And the last SEVENTEEN minutes are credits?! Pff pass on it! I wasted $3 renting from Fandango.
Seems like a good gag for a story but falls short because of the dialog. Jake Gyllenhall's flatness usually works to create a sense that what isn't normal...is, but it doesn't work here. The doubles reactions are just weird, stilted.
Que filme bom, eu amei a tensão que me fez sentir
Clever mix of weird, challenging and sunspenseful. And depressing. But the split persona theme nevertheless feels worn out.
The second actor playing the evil twin is actually identical to the first. A slow-paced film with yellowish shots that honestly annoyed me from the very beginning. Especially the characters' actions and the overall story, which lacked any logical thread. One of the worst endings I’ve ever seen—completely nonsensical. It feels like they had to finish the film abruptly (ran out of money to pay the actors?). It leaves you very disappointed due to how meaningless it is.
The twist nobody expected or wanted. This movie tries to be something that it is not.
Such an absorbing, layered and intelligent movie that really nails its surrealistic filmmaking without simply feeling pretentious. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a mesmerizing dual performance, while Denis Villeneuve's direction and the storytelling is top-notch. I also really adored the minimal use of sound and the subdued score throughout, as it really made the film pretty eerie and meditative. As for flaws, the film could have been a bit longer to further expand on some of its ideas. All in all, this is a terrific movie that is perfect for film nerds like myself and one that almost requires rewatches to understand more of its meanings and metaphors. And yeah, that ending was crazy (but definitely in a good way).
Slow, perhaps painfully so, but Enemy's heavily stylized direction and disturbing characters keep it from becoming an antagonist for the target audience... which is very small.
It started out so amazing ,i was absolutely loving it and even said to myself wow ,how have i not heard about this amazing and intriguing movie then the ending came ,,,and came it did far too soon and left u hanging like they just ran out of budget and said sorry u have to end it now ,,great acting
Enemy is an amazing film. It's full of a dread that looms over everything, stunning bleak and yellow cinematography, some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a film, and phenomenal duel performances from Jake Gyllenhaal. Enemy is a haunting analysis of guilt and identify that sticks with you for days or weeks after the ending. A film that could be thought of as an hour and a half long jump scare, Enemy is a film that will be thought about and analyzed for years to come.
Underrated one from Denis Villeneuve. 8/10
A24 makes another slow burn to capture feelings of characters. Ouch on that main character guy. Gutsy writing. Who is the enemy then?
Weird.... Very strange storey. Not sure what it meant
Really really weird movie. Don't bother
