John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. Reviews
There are some good performances, but the script is essentially just a rehash of the original. The budget was reportedly $50 million; the money is definitely not on the screen.
Ups the world -building and satire from the first film, but lacks in grit and authenticity, giving it a bit more of a cheesy feel.
Escape from LA isn't that bad. It does rehash the plot of its predecessor with a more conventionally Hollywood look and feel but I'd argue it's closer to Evil Dead 2 in that regard than Hangover 2. It also suffers from issues like some really obvious and very outdated CGI, heavy-handed satire and, while certainly more actionised than Escape from New York, isn't exactly as action-heavy as that film or even to the extent the trailer suggested. What still makes the film watchable despite these shortcomings are Kurt Russell's performance, the side characters are still enjoyable (never thought you'd see Steve Buscemi get to have his big action hero moment, did you?) and scenes that would sound ludicrous on paper such as Snake Plissken taking up surfing are directed in such a way that they still manage to make him look badass. And last but not least, the ending. No spoilers but it's certainly a ballsy choice and the lack of a third film makes it stick out all the more since, as far as we know, the world of John Carpenter's Escape is still like this. And since there WERE plans for a third film, it's pretty obvious that this wasn't supposed to be an attempt to deliberately kill the franchise like that Planet of the Apes sequel from 1970. The film entertained a risky idea...and stuck to its guns. And that's why, while these movies aren't my favourites from John Carpenter's filmography, I think Escape from L.A. is a decent sequel, even if it lacks the "impressive vision for a small budget" charm, for lack of a better term, of NY. Still wish this film could've gone easy on the CGI. This came out the same year as Independence Day, you know.
A pale imitation of its predecessor and a generally wasted opportunity.
As a weird semi-reboot, Escape from LA doesn't have the same 'visionary' feel of NY, and unfortunately Carpenter hasn't suddenly become a better director (or screenwriter) in the mean time, but LA turns the 'cool(?)' up to 11 and that alone, combined with the higher production values and slightly more likable characters, makes it a real joy to watch.
Looks like any major American city today. Freaks weirdos and criminals. Carpenter was prescient.
This movie offers very little and suffers from very bad special effects. This sequel isnt even a shell of the original.Even the 4k packaging is awkward and bad.Watching for free you may feel ripped off with losing your time
Snake Plissken, delivering a gritty performance as he navigates through a city filled with danger and deception. While the film boasts impressive action sequences and a darkly comedic tone, some may find its plot predictable and it’s special effects dated. However, for fans of the original “Escape from New York” and lovers of dystopian sci-fi,”Escape from L.A.” offers an entertaining escape into a chaotic world.
When the sequel has the same recycled story as the first mediocre film then you get a lazy sequel that should have been more.
This movie is a great way for fans of the very dark and edgy Escape from NY to get more of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell's, Snake Plisken. This one has a very 90's feel. It reminds me a lot of Arnold's Total Recall. It is not nearly as dark, or edgy as the original but still really, really fun. The special effects and budget are clearly low. John Carpenter's niche is taking a low budget and doing a lot because the characters and story are the strength. Kurt Russell is the king of the close to the vest performances. He is over the top, but a man of few words. He is tough and masculine, despite his long hair. The supporting cast, including Stacey Keach, Cliff Robertson, and Steve Buscemi are good but Donald Pleasance is sadly missing. The music by Carpenter is very soft core.
Not as good as New York but still Snake Pissken got damnit.
This is yet another ‘90s Carpenter film that has divided fans – some are happy to have another excursion with Snake, while others find it too derivative and too full of ‘90s garbage. I fall somewhere in the middle but, ultimately, having Snake back on screen is never a bad thing and I find myself enjoying everything around the few parts I dislike more and more with each viewing.
Terrible. Nothing more than a money grab given popularity of the first movie. Bad script, bad acting.
Despite being in L.A., it can feel like the first all of her again but goofier. It’s fun though, especially when Snake surfs with Peter Fonda.
It does look dated. The special effects aren't that great but I still think that they have a certain charm. It is ambitious. I don't really remember the sound. Nothing noticeable. It was probably fine. I like this film because it is silly and entertaining. The main guy is such a badass that it is awesome. The story is so silly that you have to love it. All of the characters are so wild and memorable. A good fun film that is a b-movie and I love it anyway! Cheesy entertainment!
So nonsensical and campy but fun. Kurt Russell and company make this pointless sequel a harmless waste of time.
From last few days, I have been watching John Carpenter's movie. I read alot of good things about Escape From New York and watched it. I enjoyed that movie and decided to watch this sequel even after knowing that it got less positive reviews than the original and also flopped at box office. For your info, this movie is now considered cult classic and it deserves to be. After seeing critic reviews, my expectations weren't high but I enjoyed it more than I expected. The movie was dramatic and tense. The story was the same as original. There were just a few changes, rest everything was same. Even some of the dialogues were also same. Like the original, the execution was good. The environment created in the movie was also good but this movie didn't have that much strong environment which one first created. One big complaint which I had with the movie was the special effects. They were so bad. It was looking like video games. Jurassic park which came 3 years before this movie had far far better graphics than this one. I don't understand where did the producers spent $50M? If we talk about performances, I loved Kurt Russell and others were also good. Direction by John Carpenter was just like his other movies such as Halloween, The Thing and Escape From New York. Overall, the movie is good and entertaining. You will enjoy watching it except this movie did some mistakes which were not in the original.
Not as epic or as serious as the first movie but if you take it for what it is (humorous over the top action) then you'll really enjoy it.
