Everlasting Moments Reviews

A delightful picture about class, social change, family, art & maybe love. The acting is terrific and this Swedish drama keeps you interested. Nothing bad to say about about it, at all.

A sensitive, moving portrait of a hard life. Fittingly, and perhaps intentionally considering its subject, the tint and texture of this film evoke a kind of distant nostalgia and sadness that you only get when you look at old photographs

A beautifully told story. Love, love, love!

This is a movie rooted in excellent performances, subtle visual metaphors and a lovely soundtrack. So worth seeing for all of these reasons. It's also depressing as bleep, so be sure to be prepared to feel like crap after watching it, especially armed with the knowledge that it's based on a true story.

This is one of the most beautiful Swedish movies I have ever seen like "Saraband". "Not every one could see and hear like few gifted people". This is the story of a lady who happened to discover her true passion and identity by accident which is photography. Photography lovers will cherish this movie. There are lot of other issues are going on this film like capitalism and socialism, domestic abuse, alcohol abuse, illicit romance, prostitution..you name it. Don't miss it.

Emotional, engaging drama. Set in Sweden in the early-1900s, the story of married couple, Maria (played by M0aria Heiskanen) and Sigfrid (played by Mikael Persbrandt), and their children. He is a drunk and abusive. She can definitely do a lot better, yet she sticks with him. Then she discovers photography... Interesting story, and often a harrowing ordeal. Quite frustrating at times, especially every time his darker and jealous side is revealed and she still stays with him. Does move slowly though, and the path it takes does seem a bit watered down. However, the final scenes are quite emotional, and do provide a fitting conclusion and a good point to the movie.

It's a bit Catherine Cookson, but it's penetrating and honest and moving. Beautifully produced, the the technical side is never visible - it's all about the story, not the arty camera shots or groovy soundtrack. Based on a true story, this was a good watch.

A fine portrait of one families proletariat life in early 20th century Sweden with the relatively new medium of photography providing light where there is darkness.

The reason I choose "Everlasting Moments" as my favourite film of 2008 is because there has never been anything this beautiful ever put on screen at least once. Full review at filmbroadcaster.weebly.com

good bio-pic based upon a true story

A lushly lensed and well acted film tracing the background of historic photographer, Maria Heiskanen. Despite this film's beauty and well-intentioned narrative, the pacing is off. This Swedish production is far too long and sluggish for the subject it presents. For cinematography and history buffs only.

A woman in the early 20th century with a drunk, abusive husband finds solace and happiness in photography. I have to say that this film feels kind of old-fashioned. The film has the look and feel of a period European film from the 70's and 80's, you know, the type that stereotypically gets nominated and win Foreign Film Oscars. It's not a bad thing at all though. The film is quite lovely with nice performances. Didn't blow me away but it's a well-made film for what it is.

An exceptional story about a woman learning to be an artist in a restrictive time and place. The story, images, and acting are magnificent. Please take time to see this reflectively. The characters are strong and three-dimensional. The choices they make in the early part of the 20th Century probably aren't ones we ourselves might choose. It is a movie which shows subtlety and nuances. My friends and I loved this film for the strength of the woman, her yearning for self-expression, her ability to have artistic vision in an era where there was no encouragement, the delicate balance of the relationships and limitation of choices--given the hard realities of money and social constraints. You will find it moving.

Jan Troell's historical film offers a thoughtful and politically conscious view into a time of turmoil in Swedish society. The emergence of the women's rights movement along the rise of the working class is presented through photographer Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen) a Finnish immigrant living in a violent marriage with an alcoholic husband (Mikael Persbrandt) and a brood of children. A twist of fate makes Maria win a camera. The sudden possibility of observing her environment in a creative way is a perfect symbol of what was going on in society for women in those times. "Maria Larssons eviga ögonblick" becomes a realistic tale of tentative emancipation. The story here isn't the most original, but it's told in a captivating way, utilizing the talent of a competent cast to its fullest. This film feels real and offers though-provoking analogies to present-day civil rights issues around the globe.

4/5 Sometimes we cannot set ourselves free even when it's the right thing to do, but it's also the hardest. A tale of a mother who struggled and used the camera as an escape, pictures can be worth 1000 words, but only if captured... Statistically, 1 out of every 3 women are/will be abused in their life, 3 out of every 4 women know someone who is/was abused, 3 women die every day from domestic violence & 75% of all women who tried to leave their abuser are killed (whilst trying to leave).

An exquisite little film that dares to ponder the importance of art in finding meaning in life. One of the most beautiful and meaningful films of the past 10 years.
