Evita Reviews
When I first saw this movie, as an opera lover, I quickly realized that I was in opera heaven! The melodies are infectious and the semitones dramatic and intriguing. Aside from Madonna's stellar all-digital 1989 record album, "Like A Prayer", I believe Evita is her crowning achievement. Despite Madonna's omnipresence, Antonio Banderas is the glue that holds it all together. You can watch Evita over and over, mainly for the music.
The story of the meeting of two women who have fought against prejudice all their lives. As Eva Peron, Madonna gives her best performance to date. Not to mention her success in performing the songs.
This is a movie adaptation of a Broadway musical, and it’s the first time I’ve seen a musical with no dialogue whatsoever. The narrative is sung from start to finish, which feels strange at first, but it quickly envelops you with its stunning visuals. Madonna transforms into Eva Perón, and she’s surprisingly convincing in this role; you forget about the artist and become captivated by Eva. The music is dramatic, and Madonna does an amazing job belting out demanding notes. I actually cried at the end because it delivers such emotion and realism, which is impressive considering it’s entirely sung. A true masterpiece for musical lovers!
"Evita" is a masterful cinematic adaptation of the iconic musical, brought to life by Madonna's stunning portrayal of Eva Perón. Her performance is both captivating and deeply nuanced, capturing the charisma and complexity of the Argentine First Lady with remarkable authenticity. The film's lavish production design, stirring musical numbers, and strong supporting cast all contribute to an unforgettable viewing experience. Madonna's dedication to the role is evident in every scene, making "Evita" a five-star triumph that honors the legacy of its source material while showcasing her incredible talent.
Stunning, emotional & beautiful. Alan Parker at his best, Madonna too at her best!
Totally underrated. A classic. Madonna is fantastic. Glad she won the Golden Globe for best actress. She didn't get the recognition she deserved. The movie is a gem.
A stunning epic. Some shots are just seconds long and it's clear a huge amount of time (and money) went into those shots. The orchestration is spine-tingling at times.
Parker gives the film a sense of epic scope that's rare for a modern musical, complete with large sets and thousands of extras. With the exception of Madonna's lackluster performance and singing, this is probably the best adaption of the stage musical we are likely to get.
A bit slow due to lack of actual dialogue. But so much is said in just the songs and such in this movie that there almost isn't need for much dialogue! Madonna fans will love. So much passion and emotion just in the musical numbers. Along with an inspiring bittersweet storyline.
Blobbo no like interminable drag.
An adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 1976 concept album and subsequent 1978 Broadway musical, Evita is one of the most powerful and captivating films of the late-Twentieth Century and cinematic history. In all aspects that contribute to a movie-musical, Evita excels. The cinematography contains breathtaking long-shots of the Buenos Aires cityscape with waves of Argentine working class men and women that makes you wonder how they managed to get those numbers for extras. It also contains equally powerful close-up shots of the ethically complicated protagonist Eva Peron. Eva Peron is portrayed faithfully and compellingly in this film, and it really emphasises the continued debate surrounding her legacy (see "And The Money Kept Rolling In"). Based on the true story of the former Argentine first lady, Madonna's performance of Eva highlights her approach to the craft of acting. It is often said that her performance is "stiff" and "emotionless". Whilst true, it is evidently a deliberate choice by the actress and strongly mirrors the sort of determined, unswerving, charismatic figure Eva Peron really was. Antonio Banderas is just as gripping as the cynical narrator Che, implied to be based on Argentine-born Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. Che has this semi-omnipotent nature and his degree of tangibility is often unclear, which has a profound impact on how the audience experiences the story. Jonathon Pryce performs opposite Madonna as President Juan Peron, and his recognisable style allows for effective and emotional scenes between the two. Moreover, Webber's score was an instant classic on the Broadway stage. Whilst many of it has been altered to fit the cinematic medium, the score nevertheless remains stunningly beautiful. Often, the alterations improve on the 1978 score; the number entitled "Buenos Aires", for instance, exchanged a looping piano riff for a more percussion-heavy instrumental, which really reflects the bustling nature of the city. Each song perfectly reflects the glamour and scope of the film. In summation, Evita is very much worth your time and money, and is easily one of the greatest cinematic pieces of its time.
Best directing from Alan Parker! With the best movie score ever composed! Plus the best movie songs ever sung: Don't Cry for Me, Argentina and You Must Love Me! Also, the best movie ever edited! Not to mention the best production design ever seen! And the best sound mixing ever done in a movie!
Because during election seasons it's nice to remember that some political stories are fantastic and sexy and wonderful. Here's to hope.
Madonna was not made for musical theatre. PERIOD.
Madonna actually channeled Eva Perón…all in all, from her vulnerability, her persona, her acting, and her voice, Madonna was the most human and realistic Evita Perón yet.
This atonal piece of crap mixes the bad acting of an 80s pop star with the sobering story of failed Latin American democracy. Hold on for your life as you randomly jump through times and places without any explained timeline and meet literally dozens of nameless characters with virtually no identity or relation to plot structure. If you have ever wanted Che Guevara to lead you through the looking glass of capitalistic mediocrity with less than zero artistic value, well put away your little red book and grab your ear buds and get ready for a movie that will make you wish russia won the cold war.
Do not mistake my 5 stars as fanboying simply because I enjoy musicals quite a bit. I just failed to find any sufficient flaws that warranted my removal of even half a star. Because Evita is a really great musical/biopic with great performances (Madonna actually showed capability at being a good actress), amazing musical numbers, well-shot cinematography and a compelling fact-based narrative that always kept my attention even with the constant singing, minimal spoken dialogue and little room to breathe. If you're a fan of musicals, Evita is a must-see.
Madonna is finally good in this film, an original soundtrack is wonderful ... my rating for this film was not higher here because I didn't see dramatic dialogues in the scenes. But if you expect to see a rock opera this is fantastic.
