The Faculty Reviews
One of my all-time Hood favorites.
I find it's best to watch this film without knowing the details of its story beforehand, so I won't go into detail about the story and the mystery of the faculty. We find the archetypes of students of that age: the little nerd who gets bullied, the muscular American football players, the popular girl, the depressive one, and the new girl trying to make friends. Contrary to what one might assume, no character is detestable, and we find ourselves rooting for each of them. The story is a variation of several horror books that the characters know and summarize in certain dialogues. The entirety of the film is very cliché. The initial situation, the characters, their narrative arc, and the story beats are classic. These clichés elevate it to the status of a good film. However, they limit it considerably. There are no plot twists or secrets. The viewer can guess everything about the story, except how it will end. The only surprise of the film is the two songs by The Offspring and Pink Floyd, whose lyrics are very appropriate. We leave the screening content, but without this film having offered us anything remarkable. No scene is etched in our minds, and we will quickly forget its details and its existence. A conglomeration of famous ideas from classic science fiction, but formatted in a youthful narrative in the style of a 온라인카지노추천 movie. The narrative is very simple, but effective: it is dynamic, charismatic and fun. If you are a fan of the genre, the attempts at mystery don't hold up and the lack of depth will disappoint those who expected something different here. Although predictable, the story evolves fluidly, it is neither boring nor silly. Clearly made by fans for fans, but with the resources that were available. Evaluating the CGI of a 1998 film after watching it in 2025 doesn't seem fair, but I liked the practical effects used, even if rarely. The digital effects are weak and the performances are typical of young actors at the beginning of their careers; in fact, I was surprised to see Elijah Woods, Jordana Brewster and even Usher in this cast. It is not a classic or a reference, but it is fun. I liked it!
Damn...surprisingly that wasn't bad
It's a fun and exciting watch. Honestly I had to look away from some particularly violent and graphic scenes, but would definitely recommend it if you're not too squeamish.
Being a Robert Rodriquez film, there’s surprisingly very little comedy, which would have made this fairly entertaining flick a BLAST. All the same, still a memorable ‘90s generational piece.
Another Kevin Williamson (writer of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer) High School centered horror flick. Similar to Scream, the characters are aware of the movies their situation is based on, like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", and play around with the rules of the horror/sci-fi genre. But, where Scream feels fresh and unique, this feels a bit more "paint by numbers" in it's execution. Not that it entirely fails, because I think it's serviceable, but it's nowhere near as iconic. That being said, I really have a soft spot in my heart for 90s/late 90s movies. The vibes alone make it a recommend for me.
Goofy but effective amalgamation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Breakfast Club; along with other sci-fi classics like Alien and The Thing. (And this is a BIG cult favorite and fan classic for Generation Y... It has a HUGE following!)... And a truly excellent cast and a refreshing sense of humor from Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson really keeps this buoyant...(You couldn't ask for a better cast!! Including Jon Stewart as a science teacher????!!!)...Along with solid direction from Robert Rodriguez... And there's some nice alien effects... (THIS alien isn't a big buggy thing like our beloved Xenomorph; it's more like a squid creature with writhing tentacles; and the effect is appropriately creepy). And the movie does kind of cop out at the ending by letting everyone go back to normal...That was a mistake. And I didn't mind the derivative nature of the script since this is part satire; but it did bother some critics. But overall this is a very fun, campy, sci-fi outting. Highlights include the laugh-out-loud hilarious testing scene; which is a spoof on the big testing scene in The Thing...But there's a twist!... (It's a classic!!) Anyway; good overall.
One of the best horror films of the 90's that came from prolific writer Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer), The Faculty focuses on a fresh look at what alien invasion could look like. A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Williamson's meta-humor hook, a talented cast and fun direction from Robert Rodriguez make The Faculty a solid standout among this style of horror that came in the wake of Scream.
Great B movie. Selma Hayek. Josh Hartnett. Toby McGuire. And super bad alien creature effects. The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers. With Robert Patrick who played The Terminator 2 as another disguised alien. And a classic Pink Floyd tune from The Wall. Yep, your teachers really ARE out to get you!
Left the review too long, but pretty sure this is an accurate rating.
The Faculty is a highly derivative but fun late 90's horror film. It is very much in the vein of Scream, another Kevin Williamson project, in that you have plenty of teen angst, meta references, sarcasm, and a fairly fast pace. You also get a lot of archetypal teen characters that you never really care about, but that is true of many horror films, honestly. The Thing, Alien, and any adaptation of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers is better than The Faculty, but if you are feeling nostalgic for a 90's teen horror film, this is not a bad one to watch. Just be aware that some of the special effects are a product of their time, so be prepared for some wonky CGI. It added to the film's "time capsule" charm for me, but it might be too clunky for others. Also, the soundtrack is so good in that oh so 90's way.
It may stretch its credibility with the infected towards the end but The Faculty wears its cliches on its sleeve and along with the cast it's a lot of fun
Un très bon film d'extraterrestre qui possède des réels scènes de tension
Bad writing, OK acting. Wouldn't watch it again.
A true classic of its era and genre. The Faculty is fun and I am always down for a rewatch.
A much better film than I expected and it's a bit of a cult classic. It's just a fun sci-fi movie with actors before they hit it big.
Lot of the actors became quite famous over the years.
Delightful and amusing, don't take your sensibilities so seriously. Allow yourself to be entertained.
