Foxcatcher Reviews

Steven Carrol amaze me with his versatility to act anything. Great film and great acting. Nothing like a movie that engages you from minute 1.

I can’t believe this is a true story! But yet is.

Brutal and devastating. The absolute horror of this story is absolutely prescient. Carell and Tatum were robbed of the accolades they deserved in this film. An under publicised gem of a film.

**Movie Review: Foxcatcher** "Foxcatcher" is a gripping film that, while well-crafted, feels like it's dragging its feet for much of the runtime. The story revolves around the tragic true events surrounding the murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz by eccentric millionaire John du Pont. The film boasts excellent performances from Steve Carell, who transforms into the unsettling du Pont, and Channing Tatum, who convincingly portrays wrestler Mark Schultz. Mark Ruffalo also delivers a strong performance as Dave Schultz, bringing depth and nuance to his role. While the acting is top-notch and the eerie atmosphere is well-captured, the pacing is just too slow. The movie could have used a tighter edit to maintain interest throughout its two-hour-plus duration. However, if you’re into intense character studies and can handle a slower burn, "Foxcatcher" is worth a watch for the acting alone. Three stars for great performances but a sluggish pace.

A very good serious drama about a young man trying for glory and being torn between his brother and his abusive mental unstable coach.

The price for victory can come at the cost of your self-esteem and your respect! Wrestler Mark Schultz wishes to escape his brothers shadow which leads him to John E. Du Pont, a wealthy trainer whose mentorship brings him great success but also emotional abuse that brings him low. Dark in its exploration of insecurity and negative influences, this is an emotional story where family is the ties that bind!

I respect the attempt to turn such a strange and obscure event into a movie but I think Miller's a little too vague in regards as to why this event needs to be explored. There's definitely something to du Pont's bizarre obsession with the imagery and language of "patriotism", but it seems that more should have been done with it instead of focusing so much on his need to please his mother. Still the film is effectively chilling and features unsurprisingly good performances from Ruffalo and Carell and surprisingly solid work from Tatum.

Cumple. Gran actuación de Steve Carrell

Sep 26, 2023

Flat and ponderous, lacking in good direction. A shame as the tale is interesting and tragic, the actors were capable and true to form, the sets and makeup quality.

Leaves too much out. Slow. Great cast just the story was poorly told

Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo star in Bennett Miller's brooding depiction of events surrounding wrestling enthusiast John DuPont's recruitment of Olympic gold medal winners Dave and Mark Schultz, and what lead to events between 1987 and 1996. Steve Carell gives a bone-chilling display as Jon DuPont, as he undergoes a jaw-dropping transformation, courtesy of Bill Corso and Dennis Liddiard. The film serves as both an electric depiction of what happened between these three men, and a detailed character study of John DuPont. Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) is an Olympic wrestling champion, who now spends his time speaking at elementary schools, continuing his training, and feeling overshadowed by his brother, Mark Ruffalo. That is until wrestling enthusiast and multi-millionaire John DuPont invites Mark to join his fledgling wrestling team in Pennsylvania and to be paid to train for the World Championships, and the 1988 Summer Olympics. Despite having one Olympic champion on his team, John is hungry for more, and requests that Dave comes to train at Foxcatcher, but he declines, not wanting to uproot his family. But with strings pulled and circumstances changed, Dave relocates to Pennsylvania and joins the team. As John's becomes increasingly paranoid and self-destructive, his behaviour threatens the stability of Team Foxcatcher and its members, leading to an unexpected and fatal tragedy. Steve Carell delivers an unforgettable and career-best performance as he brings DuPont's eccentric persona to the screen. ‘Magic Mike' star Channing Tatum shines alongside Carell, delivering a remarkable performance and perhaps his highlight being the intense binge eating sequence in which Tatum genuinely cut his own forehead after violently smashing a mirror. Mark Ruffalo tops off ‘Foxcatcher's trio of gripping performances, giving an equally impressive performance as his co-stars. Bennett Miller's phenomenal directing allows ‘Foxcatcher' to cover the emotion and the wrestling in perfect balance, creating a film that even non-sport fans can enjoy. ‘Dune' cinematographer Greig Fraser works his magic behind the camera, providing ‘Foxcatcher' with cool-toned, delectable cinematography that makes the film a visual feast for the eyes. Although based on true events, Miller decides to take creative liberty, including scenes that imply a ‘bromance' between DuPont and Mark, something that was later publicly criticised by Schultz. It should come as no surprise to audiences that Bennett Miller received a second Best Director nomination at the 2015 Oscars, ‘Foxcatcher' is a directorial triumph for Miller, who received his first nomination for the 2005 biopic ‘Capote'. A film in which he directed Philip Seymour Hoffman to a Best Actor win. Despite being a stirring slow-burn of a film, ‘Foxcatcher' builds its way to an explosive climax that, for people unfamiliar with the Foxcatcher story, will come as a devastating surprise. Even though you may not feel emotionally connected to the characters on screen, Bennett Miller and writers, E. Max Frye (Something Wild) and Dan Futterman (Capote) still manage to create a film that you simply can't take you eyes off, gripping onto every word. Bennett Miller directs Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo to Oscar-worthy performances. Featuring a culmination of mesmerising cinematography, steady pacing and superb writing that keeps you thoroughly engaged across the 134-minute runtime. ‘Foxcatcher' is one of 2014's best films, not only due to the meticulous filmmaking, but also the plethora of accolades the film gained, from winning Best Director at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival to 5 Academy Award nominations and 2 BAFTA nominations.

A rich trust fund baby drug addict gets really, really high one day, for the 15,00th day in a row and murders an all american family on a whim for no reason other than he is really, REALLY high man. What an ensnaring plot. Not sure how people agreed to make this plot a movie. Carrell was brutal although not much to work with in his defense. I saw the movie years ago or at least up until he offed the family but i saw the book tonight at a book store and i was just floored they made a book about it as well a movie and it was still on the shelves. i see the critics consensus says this is a thrilling crime drama. I don't think. Not thrilling in the slightest and no drama at all. hi, im high, bang, bang, bang. this stuff plays out every 8 minutes around the world all day, every day. thrilling...? drama? Get real critics. nothing redeeming in this movie being made. nothing.

Foxcatcher is a bleak, muted, and cringe inducing movie. It's bizarre on many levels. Steve Carrell's performance is outstanding as the sociopathic John Du Pont who in many ways ironically is who I imagine a rich and evil Michael Scott would be. Du Pont's overwhelming need to feel valued in a space that does not belong to him in the slightest is so uneasy to watch and creates a sense of claustrophobic tension over the entire movie ultimately ending with a shocking and tragic turn of events. This movie is tragic and beautifully done, but is missing just a tad in its middle third to put it over the edge.
