Gambit Reviews

May 8, 2025

Not quite junk, which is a severe reprimand for the Coen brothers who wrote the script (for a re-make?).

I lost my time. I don't know why i saw this movie.

I am a Brit and I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It took me a little while to work out that Messrs Firth and Courtney were very clever! Love Alan Rickman as the dreadful Shabanar! I bet he enjoyed making it!-

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I suppose I would: it's British humour. Most American reviewers just won't get it. And that's ok, as I don't get US humour much of the time. Well, on 온라인카지노추천 anyway. Many US comedy films are great!

Gambit is a remake of an old Michael Caine film, where an art dealer (Firth) attempts to con his unbearable boss (Rickman) by enlisting the help of a beautiful, but slightly naïve, American cowgirl (Diaz). With those three names on the cast list, you know it's going to be good, especially when it's written by the - critically-acclaimed - Coen brothers. However, you may be wrong. And it's not the fault of the actors. To put it simply, they're given very little to work with, script-wise. Cameron Diaz does what she does best, i.e. she's cute, a bit dippy, but thoroughly endearing nonetheless. Alan Rickman is...well, Alan Rickman - he's devious, cold-hearted and charming. Still, so far, so good, but then we come to Colin Firth - an actor who's proved his excellent credentials in numerous films. However, he's the protagonist here - attempting to basically rip-off his boss by foul means. Therefore, for us to feel sympathy towards him, we need to see him as more of a good-guy. Yet, he does very little to warm the audience towards him. He's spineless, a bit too weedy and, just because his boss isn't very nice, thinks he can take him for all he's worth. He doesn't even give us that many laughs (a few, but certainly not many). Unfortunately for him, Rickman steals the show and - despite obviously being the baddie - seems to charm the audience more than Firth can. I know Gambit is supposed to be an addition to the long line of British `farce' films, but it does tend to rely a little too much on low-brow humour, rather than utilising the cast's natural talent. Also, because it's rated 12A, it can never really descend into the `gross-out' territory and do anything too risky. Unfortunately, what you're left with is a very capable cast, being reduced to simply one of a number of stereotypes (the English are VERY English, Cameron Diaz is VERY Texan and the Japanese are VERY Japanese). It's not a bad film. I quite enjoyed it, plus it doesn't drag itself out for too long. It's charming enough in its own way, only with the heavyweight names that go with it, it could have been so much more than just an excuse to watch Cameron Diaz in hotpants.

Lots of good actors, but the plot is too contrived to be interesting. Kept my attention only off & on. Will say that I laughed out loud a few times.

It is funny to compare London and Texas in a matter of art!

What a cast! What a shame !!

Turned off after half an hour due to a boring nonexistent storyline, unlikeable characters and Diaz's awful fake accent

Enjoyable, light-hearted comedy with good writing and skilled comedic performances by some big names. You can watch it with your grandparents too.

4 stars!!! This is the best example that ratings are not to be taken seriously. The movie doesn't deserve these ratings at all. Not even a bad student project deserves 18%. I watched this movie two times since its release and I enjoyed it each time very much. The heist is smart enough and well presented. There are enough funny moments, although a few were exaggerated, when trying to show Colin Firth's character in a ridiculous way. Still, all actors did a great job, especially Cameron Diaz who was perfect portraying a Texan woman. I give it 4 stars.

Perhaps if the Coen Brothers had also directed Gambit instead of just writing it, they could have made a film that was close to the quality of the 1966 version of the story. Or, perhaps, they should have left well enough alone. I loved the original starring Michael Caine, but then I found out this was made and it piqued my curiosity. The opening of the 2 films is almost identical, and yet in one case it is brilliant and in the other it falls flat. It’s strange because with stars like Colin Firth and Alan Rickman this feels like it should be a success, but there’s just something missing. I’d like to say you can hang all the blame on Cameron Diaz, but she’s not that bad of an actress. Sure, she isn’t as good as Shirley MacLaine was in the original, but Diaz can pull off comedy better than this movie would imply. I hated the cowgirl persona she portrays, but it’s not as if she is to blame for that decision either. There’s something about Gambit that feels hollow and lacking. I think part of the problem is that the entire movie feels rushed. We don’t slow down at any point to get to know the characters, what they mean to one another, or why they are doing any of these things. One of the key aspects of any good heist film is getting you on the side of the crooks so you want to see them succeed. In this case, it isn’t even built as a heist movie, instead it’s treated like a con artist film. That can work too, but the only reason they give us to root for the con to work is that Rickman’s character is unpleasant. Even the comedy did nothing for me in Gambit. There is one sequence that felt similar to movies I’ve loved in the past, and in those films it would have made me laugh hysterically, yet here it barely warranted a chuckle. I will wholeheartedly recommend that anyone reading this check out Gambit from 1966, and pretend this version never existed.

Gambit tries to be a screwball comedy with decent performances from its leads and having the Coen brothers write the screenplay but it ultimately devolves into an unorganized mess. A shame too because I know the Coens are well-liked for their witty scripts.

Mildly entertaining.

One of the worst "comedies" I have ever seen.

A pretty average heist movie. Not funny enough or clever enough. Firth is cringeworthy and Diaz is mediocre at best. At least the late great Mr Rickman and the always awesome Stanley Tucci lend it a bit of style!

Definitely, the film is not perfect - it should perhaps have gone through one more script edit. But it has entertainment value in the comedy/ suspense / criminality genre. All things considered, Colin Firth pulled it off quite well. Combining some of the physical comedy scenes would be arguably by far best suited to Rowan Atkinson, in his Mr. Bean persona. But these, along with the badly treated by the boss from hell aspects, along with the suspenseful and human interaction scenes together equal quite a range stretch for an actor's talents. Bottom line, not the best of the Coen brothers, but worth a watch.

Not the greatest plot for a heist movie. Cameron Diaz seemed out of place in her role.

Colin Firth and Carmen Diaz in a rather formulaic tale of double crossing in the art market.
