Gangs of Wasseypur Reviews
A realistic film brought to life by amazing performances and strong character focus, but it falters in its extremely slow pacing and too many characters.
A great gangster movie in Indian cinema, first half have some cliche scenes but story picked up later and never loses the pace till end. 8.4/10
I admit that at times I didn't know what was going on or who was whom. Still, I sat through the full 5+ hours in one sitting. It's fast paced and has a true "epic" quality. I'm a big fan of the gangster genre though. If you aren't you might want to give this one a pass.
I didn't know who Anurag Kashyap was before I saw this film. And my mind was blown. This is the best gangster movie Bollywood has ever made, and that's saying something since Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai also exists. When the film begins, it seems like it will be the same old, generic good guy vs bad guy movie. But as the story progresses, the line between the good and bad people blurs to the point where it doesn't exist anymore. In the beginning it feels like Sardar Khan is supposed to be the hero, but slowly he's shown to be a terrible person who gets in fights with everyone and marries a second time just because he's getting horny. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Faisal is introduced in the second part after the demise of Sardar Khan. The bad guys really make you feel like killing them, and the way they speak is very reminiscent of the villages from Bihar and east UP. The acting by literally everyone is phenomenal, such that it inspired memes for years to come, and that's being in a good way. Every scene has been choreographed so well it actually gives you the feeling of those poor, low class families from suburban areas. It doesn't matter how many web series come up - Mirzapur, Paatal Lok, Sacred Games. The fact remains that Gangs of Wasseypur is the OG that started it all, and no one can ever replace its legacy.
Violence portrayed realistically. It portrays sexual assault and abuse in a way that many, many other Bollywood films do not.
There is a reason this movie is considered to be the Godfather of modern Indian cinema ... and that is because it is exactly that. Violent, charming, and occasionally funny, this movie (split between 2 parts) is so engrossing you won't even know where the 5 and a half hours went. The casting is superb, the gully acting seems genuine and the plot continues to thicken, generation after generation. If you want to watch a modern Indian masterpiece, look no further!
It is one of the masterpieces of Bollywood. Everyone has aced in their acting. Top notch story, screenplay, direction, background score. Just epic.
Undoubtedly, this film is the Magnum Opus of Anurag Kashyap's filmography which transcends the raw madness, hysteria, black comedy, and vengeance beyond borders. The best motion picture Bollywood has ever produced.
You might argue that Gangs of Wasseypur is nothing but the love child of Francis Coppola's 'The Godfather' with William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. But even by keeping int those standards, 'GoW' soars as a modern classic because it frames characters and layered narratives with unpredictable arcs of straightforward relationships, giving it the textured getaway for an unflinching morality tale. But this epic drama has a lot more spice than to that account. It's a brave, unforgettable gem that's instantly relatable, for someone like me especially, who has heard of all of this as someone belonging to India's coal capital and who has friends in Wasseypur. Welcome Anurag Kashyap, welcome to the badlands!
One of the greatest gangster movies ever produced. This is a glorious, marvellous and the bloodiest masterpiece ever.I request every one to watch it. Bollywood should learn something from Anurag Kashyap as bollywood can't seem to get away from creating stupid, boring, senseless and poorly directed movies.Bollywood cant' seem to get away from overacting except Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Manoj Bajpayee.
A dark and ridiculously realistic crime drama that has brought a new style of storytelling in Hindi Mainstream. The use of long takes, the use of organic music, the picture-perfect cast and the reference to many of Kashyap's favourite Hollywood classics, this film is a must-watch. With over five hours, the volume packs up action and drama in Wasseypur through generation after generation. Starts with the story of Shahid Khan, followed by his death, his son Sardar Khan's reign, and finally ending in his grandson avenging all the deaths. The story of Wasseypur is well-written and well-executed.
