Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Reviews
I had the pleasure of seeing it recently and as a new generation I find it extremely good and entertaining. The songs and the plot, I think, make a huge click in my brain since I love the color palette they used throughout the film, it's striking.
A terrific cast and great songs makes this a delightful movie for generations. Tim Treakle
The man responsible for films like African Queen and Rio Bravo does show off some his genre range here. A decent musical I'd say. Not all the numbers are memorable and Monroe is a bit over the top.
I was quite shocked while watching this classic at how much I was not enjoying it. The musical numbers are great - I wish there had been more of them. And, of course, Monroe's DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND number toward the end is rightfully iconic. The trouble for me were the scenes in between those moments. I didn't particularly care for or about these characters, I thought the plot was a bit hackneyed, and I just didn't get into the groove of this one. I wasn't charmed, and I wasn't entertained. Hawks is the same director who brought us BRINGING UP BABY, one of the greatest cinematic comedies in history. I wish this one had just a fraction of that film's humor and wit. Monroe and Russell have undeniable star wattage - I just wish their efforts had been used toward a better film.
loved the story and the characters
Cliché and boring. An early dance scene was plastic. Monroe has one good dance scene near the end.
Not even Monroe can rescue this paper thin plot. Somehow we ended up with a musical justifying gold digging. The songs are boring as usual, the US Olympic team what??? All sorts of oddness going on here. Not a fan. Finally watched this long held DVD today.
Its significantly different than the original stage production (on top of several plot changes, the movie forgets its a musical for much of of the middle section) but that doesn't matter because the movie is just endlessly delightful. Russell and Monroe make for a fabulous comedic duo.
You have seen it before and done better.
A great movie musical with a classic number: "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". Marilyn Monroe shines in this flashy entertainment.
If you've never seen a Marilyn Monroe movie, start here! Charming, hilarious and beautifully shot, this is Marilyn at her comic best!
This is a certainly somewhat dated musical comedy/romance film. The characters vary in age from a young boy to elderly people, all of whom have a certain appreciation for the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. It seemed a little bland at first, even though the musical numbers weren't unenjoyable, it didn't keep me gripped to the screen but the plot did get a bit better after a while.
I loved this movie. It's utterly glamorous. The film score is brilliant, it's beautifully shot, the dance sequences have such humour (the pool dance with the flesh coloured swimming trunks is so hilarious) and are excellently choreographed. The performances of the two main characters, Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe are flawless. They complement each other so well, and their slick professionalism shines through, while still retaining a human element. You feel they loved being on set. It's a timeless, classic production, guaranteed to chase away the blues. Monroe's performance is intelligent and highly comedic. This movie beautifully displays how she could play to the male gaze, while turning to the female and winking conspiratorially. Monroe can have a whole conversation just by raising an eyebrow. This was her secret, women loved her as much as men. Jane Russell is a brilliant foil for her, offering an earthiness which juxtaposes Monroe's more ethereal lightness. I highly recommend this movie for all age groups, there's something for everyone. It's a brilliant study of female sexuality and intelligence and it's real good fun.
It is undoubtedly Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell's captivating magnetism that makes Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as entertaining as it is.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a charming & innocent musical comedy. And while this movie is pretty cheesy, the sets, costumes, songs, and dances are absolutely mesmerizing. Speaking of which, it's impossible to take your eyes off Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe whenever they're on the screen. They both give commanding & amusing performances as the "little girls from Little Rock."
Classic musical from the 50's focusing on the changing of women's roles in film. "Dumb" blonde Marilyn Monroe and her best friend, "Smart" Jane Russell, play to the stereotypes foisted on them by 50's conventions with tongue planted somewhat in cheek. The dancing and singing numbers are great. Well worth the time invested.
30% rating. I don't understand how some of these movies are considered classics. I found little interesting about this film.
This musical/screwball comedy definitely didn't live up to the hype for me. The screenplay was incredibly weak and with the exception of a few humorous scenes (one involving a charming child actor, Monroe, and a porthole) and the well known Diamonds are Forever number, there isn't much carrying this film aside from the likability and positive energy of the two stars.
