Get On Up Reviews

Jul 6, 2024

This film captures James Brown's boundless energy. What some reviewers call chaotic is the exuberant charisma of its main character. For those of us who lived through the James Brown experience, this movie is remarkable in conveying the man and his music. The man was larger than life, and Chadwick Boseman brilliantly and faithfully makes him live.

"Get On Up" is a thunderous yet conventional biopic. The film would jump randomly through different decades in a certainly off order, the direction wasn't that great, and this falls into the same formulaic pitfalls that biopics usually fall into. Viola Davis was severely underused, but the crown jewel of this film is James Brown himself. Definitively his best performance of all time, Chadwick Boseman brought the icon to life in the most electrifying way possible.

Crazy biopic and will have you scratching your head also tapping your feet, Chadwick has put on an memorable tribute for the legendary James Brown.

My husband really enjoyed this movie. The acting was good and I found it kind of interesting but also depressing, so once is good enough for me.

The acting is great, and Chadwick Boseman should have been up for all the awards but nothing else transness normal biopic cliches.

I found this an engrossing and intriguing watch, certainly from the musical biopic point of view. Also, the cast/performances were pretty memorable, including, of course, the vocal performances. The energy of James Brown's live shows was put across well, I felt, from what I know. I didn't know much about the man's upbringing/childhood and so I found it both interesting and revealing to see what sort of a background he was from, although, I suppose, in a sad way it shouldn't surprise me, given the prevalence of poverty, particularly in non-whites, at that particular time. If I were to criticise the film, I'd say that it may have slightly glossed over what happened following James hey-day, as it were, although I understand if this was primarily meant to be a celebration of his success. Overall its certainly a solid example of a well-made music biopic, even if it isn't perhaps quite as thorough as it maybe could be. Oh and there's one other thing I'd like to mention - I noticed Mick Jagger was noted as a producer, in the first few credits at the end of the film. The Rolling Stones were mentioned in the film - Mick being played by Nick Eversman. Speaking of credits, as is often the case, old photos of James Brown are shown and some additional information about him is provided in the form of on-screen text. I've no doubt you could find some worse examples of this sort of a film, than this particular title, hence I'd definitely recommend it, yes.

The non linearity is appreciated, but it's just not an especially engaging musician biopic in a crowded genre.

Get On Up is both a celebration of one of the most influential artists of all time and a showcase for Chadwick Boseman’s talent and charisma.

The Father of Funk!! Boseman played him to a tee I thought it was James Brown himself. I loved Brown growing up and I saw him in a club during his down phase in the early 80's before his comeback. I was the only white / Hispanic in the joint. His staff asked me and I said hey reverse racism here. The said ''no boy that ain't it son.' How old are you as we need the young ones to appreciate Mr. Brown. I told them 19 and I couldn't any of my friends to come; black or white, but it was James Brown and I had to go. RIP to both artists

An unconventional but nonetheless fascinating biopic on the life and career of the Godfather of Soul James Brown, driven not so much by the story of Brown's life than by the powerhouse performance by Chadwick Boseman.

Not perfect but darn close to it. A very human James Brown was portrayed well and the music was toe-tapping.

Chadwick Boseman's performance will go down as the quintessential portrayal of James Brown.

It's one of the rare movies that I wish went on longer than it did. Chadwick Boseman stole the show as James Brown and I could have watched several more hours of his performance.

As electric (per usual) as Chadwick's performance is, the film unfortunately passes over James Brown's iconic "Hot Tub" entirely.

Get on up is a nicely rounded made film that shows the enigmatic personality of James Brown and his child hood upbringing and rise to fame, more importantly, it features Chadwick Boseman's acting Chops.

Chadwick Boseman is terrific, but 'Get on Up' is missing something that would make it a great biopic. I still very much enjoyed it, I always tend to find biographical films interesting - especially when I don't know too much about the person(s) in question, as is the case with James Brown here; I've always known of him and his major songs, but that's about it. Boseman leads strongly, carrying the film really. That's not to say he's alone in terms of the onscreen talent, as there are others who I liked. Dan Aykroyd is solid, while Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis are welcomed cast members. The brilliant Lennie James is also involved, admittedly in a relatively small role. With all that noted, I just felt there was something missing. I can't exactly pinpoint what that is. One of the things I felt from the start was the lack of likeability I had for the lead character, perhaps that was intentional though. The 'breaking the fourth wall' stuff is iffy, too. The 139 run time probably comes into it as well, while the ageing for Boseman & Co. isn't the best I've seen - which isn't good, given the film opens with a scene that requires ageing so it naturally stuck in my memory more. As also mentioned at the top, I didn't come into this knowing all about James Brown and his music/life so that likely plays a part - though I've seen other biopics under similar circumstances and it hasn't affected my enjoyment. There are still other positives, aside from the cast, of course. I actually liked the non-linear structure of how the story is told, while the cinematography is pleasant. The music is also worked in well. All in all, it's a film that I would recommend. It had all the ingredients to be grander though.

Two great performances in one role! A look into the life of James Brown worth seeing. I was never bored during this movie; it kept my attention the whole time. The story switched from the past to the present many times which was done well. to give a greater understanding. R.I.P. to both men.

Breathtaking direction, editing, acting, all crafts. Wonderful example of an unsung film that deserves much more attention than it received.

Oh, Chadwick! What a performance! Incredibly well acted and directed, Chadwick is on fire in this biographical drama. And the performances of pretty much everyone else are equally strong. It starts a little drawled and mumbly, but you've just got to get through that and adjust your hearing... it isn't the same throughout the whole film. The timeline jumps about - at times in an irritating fashion, with no real pattern to it. However, on the whole, this doesn't detract from when it's done successfully, and enhances the movie. It felt like it could have been about 30mins shorter
