Ghost in the Shell Reviews

Unlike in the anime, this version of the Major is more of a renegade than a leader and cares far more about herself than her teammates. She spends a large chunk of the movie pitying herself.

| Original Score: 2/10 | Jul 20, 2023

Overall, Ghost in the Shell pales in comparison to the 1995 film by lacking a cohesive, well developed plot, substantive themes and a captivating pace.

The presentation has been shaped to Hollywood specifications and robbed of its potential uniqueness, insight, or innovation.

Although the density of the source is lost among so many action sequences, the provocative ideas and the philosophical substrate of Masamune Shirow's work continue to inhabit the background of the film [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 2, 2022

Effective as both an action flick and, more impressively, a sociopolitical piece that casts a wary eye toward the future.

Fails to do anything beyond what's already on the page.

Filtered through a Hollywood lens, what was once a seminal work of cyber punk is reduced to a superhero origin story with action scenes aplenty.

To its credit, the sets are stunning, the costumes are faithfully adapted, and the makeup is flawless.

While it's fun to look at, it takes a good hour before we can get any sort of emotional content or drive for Major.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 5, 2020

Of course Ghost in the Shell delights on a visual level, however without the complex foundation that made it popular and critically acclaimed in the first place, the end result is a massive disappointment.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 26, 2020

Directed in pedestrian fashion by Rupert Sanders of Snow White and the Huntsman ignominy, Ghost in the Shell is both boring and derivative. What's more, the casting is an even bigger problem than expected.

Every story has the opportunity to justify its actions ... Not only did it not do that, it actually made it worse.

A worthy effort that questions what it is to be human and the role of technology as we move forward. At least you can't say it isn't asking big-picture questions.

They had a great opportunity, and they blew it.

| Feb 19, 2020

Though not perfect, this is an ambitious, distinctive and spectacular piece of cinema which, beyond its occasional low points, is memorable mainly for its electrifying highs.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 6, 2020

There are aspects of the film worth commending and parts that will annoy even a novice but ultimately, if you enjoy science fiction stories, you won't be disappointed.

... [I]t's visually beautiful and successful recreates many of the iconic scenes from the Japanese anime film (itself an adaptation of a manga); yet it fails to capture the central essence of the story.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 2, 2020

Like Disney's live-action adaptations of its animated classics, this film is frequently beautiful but utterly fails to justify its existence.

This version is cobbled together with bits and pieces taken from the earlier films and series. Unfortunately, for its skeleton they looked entirely elsewhere: they went with Verhoeven's Robocop, though they first excised all wit and satire from it.

Visually sumptuous and awesomely transporting.
