G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Reviews

You’d be better off buying the toys and acting out your own adventures—the result would prove more satisfying.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Sep 4, 2023

Tatum fits the bill as a soldier well, physically and mentally, but his acting skills are rough.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 28, 2021

Appalling blockbuster garbage.

| Apr 23, 2021

At least plenty of stuff blows up.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Nov 28, 2020

The acting is consistently weak with the exception of a surprisingly hip Sienna Miller.

| Original Score: 1.5/4.0 | Sep 8, 2020

You'd think it would be impossible not to extract some fun from a tale climaxing with a nuclear attack on the Eiffel Tower. But the filmmakers found a way.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Jun 6, 2020

GI Joe is first and foremost an action movie, designed for bombastic effects, exhilarating sequences...and larger-than-life characters.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 29, 2019

If I'm to have American imperial propaganda, I couldn't ask for it to be any more shoddily made or any more unconvincing than this.

Tatum and Miller are dreadfully bad. Wayans feels like he came in from the set of another movie and Dennis Quaid, as the G.I. Joe commander, looks about as disinterested with the whole affair as I was by the time the film ended.

| Original Score: D- | May 16, 2019

Moves at a brisk enough pace to keep its rampant stupidity merely annoying rather than actively offensive.

| Original Score: C- | Nov 2, 2018

G.I. Joe lacks structure, believability, decent characters, competent actors and the helmsman has clearly abandoned ship. Save yourself a headache and don't bother with this one.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Sep 8, 2017

A dull, passionless take on a property that any fan could have outdone with half the budget. No Joe!

| Original Score: 1.5/10 | Mar 23, 2013

It's about nothing, but who cares? It's the last big action movie of the summer and it does what it's supposed to do.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Apr 4, 2011

Here comes GI Joe, a film so loud and dumb it makes Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen look like a Mike Leigh docudrama.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 27, 2010

As is usually the case, the seething bad guys make for far more "interesting" onscreen characters than the heroes.

| Aug 9, 2010

Joe is the latest bloated float in Sommers's sad parade of cinematic shame...a glorified Cannon Films production with a nasty case of ADD."

| Original Score: D+ | Jun 2, 2010

G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra is a very throwaway experience, likely to be forgotten by the film world very quickly.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 15, 2010

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is like a term paper that fulfills the word count requirement and drops in key phrases to demonstrate some familiarity with the material but is largely filler.

| Original Score: C | Jan 31, 2010

It's just as you would expect: poorly acted, conventionally written and occasionally fun.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 12, 2009

... it's actually better (again, the wrong word; "not nearly as awful" is closer to correct) than the recent Transformers sequel, and significantly shorter to boot.
