Go for Sisters Reviews
It’s worth mentioning that Sayles has commendably produced the sort of project Hollywood rarely churns out but otherwise the ideas here lack inspiration. The movie illustrates that talented craftsmanship isn’t necessarily equatable to great art.
| Original Score: C+ | Sep 12, 2023
An overlong cut that’s dense on plot (arguably the least interesting thing about the film) and dull whenever it chooses to indulge quiet moments among characters.

Arthouse appeal is solid for a film that, though not nearly as commercial as Lone Star or endearing as Secret of Roan Inish, plays to the filmmaker’s strengths and makes good use of costar Edward James Olmos.

Tighter scripting and a more focused storytelling approach would have helped. Even as it stands, though, the film is a compelling, unassuming little morsel worth checking out.

Ross and Hamilton are captivating, and you'll come away from Go For Sisters in awe of them and thrilled because you'll have discovered a film that resoundingly fails to adhere to formula or stereotype.

It's Hamilton and Ross' incredible on-screen partnership that makes Go For Sisters a solid success for the indie maverick.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Apr 3, 2019
Go For Sisters prefers the roads less traveled - only in a Sayles film would a car chase be interrupted for a stop for gas - and for those that enjoy the scenic route, it's an bumpy yet agreeable ride.

A dangerous border town as no country for old men or middle-aged sisters either.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Aug 14, 2014
Even the smallest of the many roles in the cast has some telling detail, and Olmos makes the most of a grumpy bear rousted from his hiding place.
| Apr 7, 2014
John Sayles is too talented, too authentic and too original to make a flat-out bad movie, but he flirts with it in "Go for Sisters."
| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 19, 2013
Sayles' original screenplay uses the broken criminal justice and immigration systems as a backdrop for its story, never pushing a political agenda at the expense of its human one.

Few other filmmakers could handle this material with such an even hand.

While this film is not up to LONE STAR, it is an involving if low-key thriller that uses the setting with its drug gangs and illegal emigration scams as palpably as a character.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 17, 2013
It's an intriguing work, one that is handled intelligently and with sensitive acting from the leads.
| Original Score: B | Dec 17, 2013
Both a perceptive human drama and old school crime mystery, Go for Sisters is a film with a lot to say and deserving of your utmost attention.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 14, 2013
This buddy/road film builds tension with its missing person quest in a border-crossing underworld.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 13, 2013
The strong characters and their fascinating relationships save the movie. The two women are both strong, smart and cynical.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 13, 2013
Once Olmos joins the proceedings, "Go For Sisters" begins to resemble a banal prime-time cop show.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 12, 2013
Few male writer-directors have explored female characters more ardently than John Sayles (Passion Fish, Sunshine State, Casa de los Babys), and this leisurely mystery features some of his best.
| Dec 12, 2013
An absorbing picture with two exceptional performances from LisaGay Hamilton and Yolonda Ross, who bring sublime presence to an effort that often needs their conviction.
