What to Know

Critics Consensus

With just enough human drama to anchor the sweeping spectacle of giant monsters smashing everything in sight, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla satisfyingly restores the franchise's fire-breathing glory.

David Sims AV Club Every time Edwards' Godzilla rears up, you stiffen with excitement. Every time he roars, Edwards wants you to feel it and wince. Sep 22, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire 'Godzilla' doesn't feel cynical; there's a sense of joy to the picture, of honest-to-God fun, which separates it from many of its summer movie brethren. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Diego B Best thing about this movie is the atmosfere Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/25 Full Review Paul S The characters were great and the visuals for Godzilla and the MUTOs were incredible. I definitely recommend this for monster movie and action fans! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Alysha S 4.2. The story is great and the action and music are tremendous. Unless I'm missing something obvious, I don't know why it's not liked more. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Stephen L Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014) takes a measured, atmospheric approach to the iconic kaiju, delivering a visually stunning blockbuster that values tension and scale over non-stop destruction. The film’s greatest strength lies in its ability to make Godzilla feel truly massive—each appearance is carefully built up, emphasizing his weight and presence with breathtaking cinematography and immersive sound design. However, the film’s biggest gamble is its restraint. While the slow-burn approach works in creating anticipation, it also sidelines Godzilla for large portions of the runtime. The human characters, led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, serve more as placeholders than compelling protagonists, making certain stretches feel less engaging. That said, when the film finally unleashes its monster spectacle, the payoff is undeniably satisfying, with a climactic battle that delivers pure cinematic awe. Despite some pacing missteps, Godzilla (2014) succeeds as a visually rich, well-crafted reintroduction to the legendary creature. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Justin T There was too much shaky camera and watching in 3D doesn’t add anything except some of the kaiju shots later in the movie. This is a high quality production but Godzilla only shows up half-way through and it feels like a very long film as it’s over 2 hours but still not as long as the previous American Godzilla film. The effects are really excellent with great destruction when it happens, but it’s so infrequent and only shown briefly. It’s a shame that they start fighting or start destroying then cut away to people skydiving or wandering through rubble almost immediately missing all the kaiju action. I get that they wanted to show it from the human’s perspective and that’s why they cut away from the best of the monster action but if they were committed to that approach then why so many high angles? These kaiju look so much better from low angles, it gives them more scale. At least most of it was set at night where the kaiju look better. The characters are dull except Bryan Cranston but he’s barely in the film. It’s mostly entertaining but not fun. I think it would have been good if there was way more city smashing and monster fighting. What we did get was good though. Visually it’s a hell of a lot better than Godzilla (1998) but actually less enjoyable overall. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
