Goodnight Mommy Reviews

Feb 11, 2025

A beautifully dark suspense film from Austria that seems to be a bit too much inspired by Thomas Tryons classic tale “The Other”. While the twists are obvious and the reveal at the end is not that big of a surprise, the atmosphere and acting (especially from the young actors) and direction definitely elevate this creepy bed time tale.

I knew this was going to be a slow movie, so I let it cook. And what a crazy, unexpected, and disturbing third act we get! This movie came so close to making me feel as disturbed as Speak No Evil and We Need to Talk About Kevin did! IhateitIloveitIhateitIloveit!! I still feel like there are some loose ends, though. Likeee, all that pizza!? Wtf hahaha. And in what world do a couple of nonprofit guys just walk into your house and wait for you so you can give them money? Hahahah

A slow burn of foreign horror that starts out going in one direction before pivoting on a dime to something much more sinister.

It’s worth a watch. The building sense of dread is palpable as the audience is hit with more and more clues. As I figured out the ending nearly, maybe a few too many clues. If you don’t mind seeing through the veil early, it’s worth your time.

After their mother returns from the hospital, her face covered with bandages, twin boys begin to suspect she isn't who she says she is. Very intense film with engaging performances from all three actors. Although their motivation is understandable the twins are some of the creepiest kids I've observed in cinema. Two warnings: 1) the situations get very intense. Not for the squeamish; 2) don't confuse this with the Naomi Watts version released in 2022. It was poorly received. Wait around til the 30 minute mark or so to see if it hooks you.

Completely monotonous film, meaningless ending, terrible acting (especially the twin protagonists) and no suitable soundtrack. The 2022 Remake is much better.

Liked the plot and deliverance, maybe effects could be improved?

For the love of God, don't watch this utterly pointless movie.

This film follows in line with similar psychological horrors(such as A Tale of Two Sisters) but exceeds the predecessors by being smoother. Any knowledge of "twists" does not take away from the film as the narrative is strong enough on its own. I would highly recommend and don't forget to floss!

As this suspenseful masterpiece unfolds, you'll find yourself swaying between the many possible outcomes. A grounded horror thriller that dives into the emotionally charged minds of overly imaginative twin boys and their conflicted mother.

Que filme!!!! Um ótimo suspense. Apenas assistam.

It is very contraintuitive to give this movie a high rating, because I partly wish I haven't seen it, but that is also the reason why I consider it a well-made horror. Clearly not for wide audience, very disturbing, depressing and difficult to let go of.

just great...what an ending

Jul 14, 2023

Seems very straightforward and eerie, until things quickly take a very sharp turn into the evil that can be found in innocence. Fun to watch by yourself or with friends. Slow moving, but decently well worth the wait.

I didn't love it. Barely any dialogue, kinda bored me, a few scenes that seemed pointless, more creepy than scary. Until the end, then it gets pretty brutal.

Excellent film. The remake was awful (sorry Naomi). This movie had an incredible creepy ambiance factor that most horror movies can't achieve. It was so mysterious, which made it fun to watch. The ending was brutal and mind-bending. Highly recommend but please don't watch the other one.

This was uncomfortable to watch. And the supposed plot twist… I figured that out at the beginning of the movie. Visually engrossing with a ton of tension but so much tension it gave me anxiety… 3 stars

A twist you can see coming in the first 10 minutes. The last hour is just torture porn.

In this version the kids were the psycho... in the 2022 version the mom was the psycho.

(Spoilers) This movie is over-rated. This is basically a ripoff of one of my favorite movies ever. That movie is the 1972 Robert Mulligan-directed evil twin movie called The Other. The Other is absolutely terrifying! Seriously one of the best horror movies ever made! And I suggest everyone reading this go out and buy it, rent it or stream it; it's truly amazing. The Other delves into the subtle-but-creepy-and-it-gets-under-your-skin zone. It's THE iconic evil twin movie; a genre that was started by Henry James and his terrifying twin tale from 1898 The Turn of the Screw. The Other is about two 11 year old boy twins living in Connecticut with their Farmer-family during The Depression. They terrorize everyone in their family and neighborhood; and somehow don't realize there's anything evil or different about themselves, (when there certainly is)!! And if they weren't creepy enough already, they start using ESP to kill people. Trust me, it's terrifying!! There's a scene in that movie where the boys, Niles and Holland Perry, gang up on their mother Alexandra, and viciously push her down the stairs; leaving her paralyzed and half dead. For the rest of the movie they fawn all over her; push her around in a wheelchair and read creepy stories to her that clue her in to their future serial killing plans that will be coming. Goodnight Mommy is just a ripoff of that scene. They took that one scene from the Other and blew it up into a full movie. Also the, "ohmigosh, both twins were actually the same person!" plot twist is a lazy ripoff of a lot of other movies. See The Other, Sisters, the Law and Order: SVU Episode "Identity", Malignant, The Patty Duke Show, Sister Sister, Trilogy of Terror, "The New Landlord" episode of Different Strokes where Arnold pretends to be his own brother, etc. They all have that the-siblings-are-actually-the-same-person plot twist. And all of these plot twists are actually rifting off of Psycho where the crazy boy and the mother are the same person. So it's not an original plot! If you don't believe me, read all the reviews of this movie, they all say the same thing; that this movie is ripping off "The Other"! And the ending where they burn the mother to death in this movie is grotesque. That's the worst kind of torture porn. Not recommended!
