Goosebumps Reviews

An amusing, if overstuffed adaptation of classic R.L. Stine tales. As the children's author, Black is solid and so is the FX, though the shrieking best friend performance by Ryan Lee quickly becomes grating and Hannah's resolution is wonky at best.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 24, 2023

The film adaptation of R.L. Stine's classic horror novels is shockingly enjoyable.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 8, 2021

Will tickle your funny-bone more than raise any actual goosebumps, but it's a fun throwback to the kind of teenage thriller best enjoyed at a Saturday afternoon matinee movie with a large box of popcorn and a Coke.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 4, 2021

Better than you think it's going to be, but it also doesn't quite live up to the nostalgic glory.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 9, 2020

If you're looking for a light-hearted movie with a bit of bite, or something to entertain your children that won't melt your brain, this is it. A very pleasant surprise.

Goosebumps is a movie you can watch with the kids and not be mad; you'll have a good time.

It is an effective family hobby that knows how to create a story around the universe of the saga created by R.L. Stine, but finding its own voice. [Full Review in Spanish]

It leaves a pleasant taste in our mouth, even if nothing in its plot is especially surprising. [Full Review in Spanish]

Basically the rest of the movie is the group getting chased by one creature and then another until the final showdown at the high school. But it is all done with enough charm and humor that I was entertained.

| Original Score: B- | Apr 18, 2019

Goosebumps isn't particularly a must-see, but if you are so inclined to be entertained and have some fun with creatures that once belonged only in books, then this film might be exactly what you're looking for.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 10, 2019

Despite a sharp-ish script, some strong comedy performances, and plenty of love for its source material, Goosebumps is still not balanced or worthy enough to truly satisfy R.L. Stine aficionados.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 9, 2019

Rob Letterman's mile-a-minute, edge of your seat, raucously funny Goosebumps confirms that the 1990s petrifier of children is alive and kicking.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 8, 2019

Perhaps the tots will get a decent rise out of the jolly emptiness that is Goosebumps. As for the rest of us, we will probably get a better result in sucking on last year's recycled stale Halloween candy.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 9, 2018

Goosebumps is a really fun film.

| Original Score: 6.5 | Aug 30, 2018

It respects the novels you love while having fun with the characters and doing some interesting things with R.L Stine. Can you really ask for anything more than a wonderful celebration of Stine's imagination?

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 3, 2017

Goosebumps is a film that delivers a modicum of timely spectacle for half-term but almost nothing in the way of convincing movie magic.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 25, 2017

Goosebumps is not a faithful adaptation of the books, but it is a fun introduction to horror for kids.

| Oct 16, 2017

The real stars of Goosebumps are the monsters themselves.

| Jun 1, 2017

Goosebumps finds that balance, managing to capture not only the charm of Stine's work, but the scares as well, without straying too far in either direction.

| Feb 24, 2017

Jack Black is the ringmaster in a three-ring circus of family horror that stays faithful to everything that made R.L. Stine's junior pulp fiction such a '90s playground sensation.
