The Great Outdoors Reviews
Classic must-see movie, great cast, great acting all around, fun for all ages and the whole family everyone would enjoy. A classic comedy I enjoyed with my parents, and I will with my children as well.
I think it’s a fun time I guess. I didn’t laugh a lot but I did enjoy a lot of what the film had to offer. So you know what, 3.5/5 stars.
Although a fun movie for its day, and a regular rental in the 90s, it doesn't stand the test of time . I hate saying that because Hughes is a genius. But watching it in 2025 shows it's limitations. And it's not a generational thing , Trains planes and automobiles stands the test of time. It seems thrown together. Borrowed alot from the original vacation. Too many campy tropes Borrowed from 80s films of the time. It's definitely worth a watch with the family on a weekend- but is not gut busting humor by any means.
Jimmy Buffett music The old 96er "I think he's saying go faster" Candy bars at the bear dump Chasing the bat Love all of it ..
If you are trying to describe what a Yuppie was to anybody under the age of 40, this is the movie to watch and Dan A. is said yuppie. The movie did not hold up and is as flat as it can be. Had totally forgotten it was a John Hughes movie and might be his worst movie ever. I'm not sure what they were shooting for in this movie. All form, no substance.
One of the best comedies and one of the best movies in my DVD collection.
Best John Candy Film ever made! A timeless comedy that never gets old! Too much going on to write it all in a review, but seriously if you have not watched it yet, what are you waiting for? You will Laugh until you cry at this movie!
Though fans of Dan Aykroyd and John Candy may get their fix, this slapstick comedy doesn't have enough slapstick or well-set-up scenarios to justify the more dramatic moments.
Great American classic and better than a lot of modern comedies. Definitely recommend watching this if you haven’t seen it and I don’t understand all the bad reviews
A must watch for any true comedy fans. So, so good 👌
Very funny. One of John Candy's best movies.
Such a classic! Family favorite for sure.
Scratching my head with disbelief after reading all of the negative reviews. This movie is just about perfect in my opinion. It's charming, funny, nostalgic, and the pace/edit is really well done. It's 1988 ,Dan Aykroyd and John Candy are in their prime. There's quite a bit of activity packed into this one. Side note, the soundtrack is a wild good time, it's eccentrically unique and greatly compliments the characters. And who could forget the finale, A shotgun blast to a raging bear, revealing a naked "bear A**" bear....Legendary. Two top notch actor/comedians in an 80's summer vacation movie, what else do you want?!
John Candy and Dan Ackroyd together make for a pretty great movie. Good story and many funny moments.
You cannot beat this cast, John Candy is so funny. Classic movie. I love it. Seen it dozens of times, never gets old
A movie that delves into the absurd while keeping the characters grounded and consistent. Struggles some with pacing and tries to explore side-plots that exacerbate this.
Classic John Candy film with Dan Akroyd. One of those films from the 80's where you remember specific scenes like the bear showing cheeks. Good message about family that tries not to be so serious and at the same time show how important family outings can be.
Love this movie and watch it almost every time I run across it. Reminds me of some family vacations from when I was a kid. John Hughs must have done some vacationing in Northern Wisconsin.
Classic, watched many many times of childhood family memories , great vibe and laughs. If you do like it, something wrong with you, and probably come from a broken twisted family that doesn't get it... glad I don't know you, but are the ones destroy values and cinema today. Only negative really would be the teenage son romance stuff.
Nothing great about it.
