The Great Outdoors Reviews
Dan Aykroyd has been in some absolutely terrible movies. John Candy has been in some absolutely terrible movies. Now they're in the same absolutely terrible movie.

In short, "The Great Outdoors" has the wit of "Summer Rental" and the sparkle of "Harry and the Hendersons."

"The Great Outdoors" succeeds as a perfect summer's movie: not too deep, not too long, not too verbally witty or politically witty, not too embarrassing, not too sexy. Just a good time in air conditioning.

This possibly is the first time in cinematic history that raccoon-ese has been translated in subtitles.

The sight of a bear running through the woods with bare buttocks probably has some superiors in the history of comedy. But not this week.

John Hughes is the Crazy Eddie of movies aimed at teen-agers with nothing better to do.

It's impossible to watch Candy and not laugh, even when the shtick is as stock as bear chases and bat combat.

Like an early-summer fly, it can be brushed off easily.

"The Dopey Outdoors" would be more like it.

The family element in Great will appeal to people of all ages especially those with their own horror stories from family vacations.

A generally good time for the viewer who is willing to swallow a dose of slapstick hooey.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 16, 2023
Candy and Aykroyd do what they can with this by-the-numbers picture, but it's not enough to push "The Great Outdoors" to greatness, or even pretty-goodness.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 16, 2023
The spots of slapstick are mixed up with domestic sitcom, the teenage son's fumbling romantic progress and familial sentiment to fuddling and tedious effect.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 16, 2023
The Aykroyd-Candy pairing is charmed.
| Jun 16, 2023
This movie has little character development, even less resolution, and an almost non-existent plot.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 16, 2023
Aykroyd and Candy, who can be hilarious, should have been choosier.

...a decidedly familiar setup that's employed to watchable yet mostly forgettable effect...

At the onset it seems that Candy, as in Uncle, plays the lower class half. Yet, by [Outdoors'] end we learn that the in-law is actually broke, essentially Cousin Eddie in disguise.

Charming when it works, when it is based primarily in the interplay between characters or in the writer's unabashed nostalgia for a kind of cozy Americana.
