Directors Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein have crafted an unusual documentary that chronicles life at Gunner Palace in Iraq from the point of view of the US troops. Some of the most powerful moments have to do with segments showing off the rapping skills of some of the troops. They're piercing and full of commentary.
I refreshingly agenda-free look at the war in Iraq and those brave (and unfortunate enough) to fight it. Over the course of the documentary you are introduced to the soldiers stationed at "Gunner Palace"--a former stately home to Hussien's son. Join the soldiers on raids, listen to their stories and their woes, watch as they survive and die. The film has no conclusion and no catharsis, making it an excellent document of the war in Iraq.
A meandering collection of footage from Iraq, following members of the US military through both their work and casual time, all narrated by a guy who sounds like a Batman-costumed Christian Bale.
hugely insightful and obviously realistic, but lacks the punch i expected .. these soldiers seem bored with their 'job' and that vibe leaks right off the screen and into the audience ..
A down-to-earth movie about the lives of soldiers in Iraq. Not sensationalized, not glamorized, not idealized, not criticized.
"The kids are really funny 'cause at first they'll be like 'Mr., Mr.' and then they'll realize, oh, 'Mrs., Mrs.' and then they want to talk to you even more. Like you get swarms of kids just right in front of you. You try to be friendly to 'em while looking around, making sure no one's gonna shoot you. But the guys are even funnier. You have 'em walk by you and then you see 'em, their heads still turnin', about to trip over themselves tryin' to walk. Then you have some people lookin' and about to crash their cars. I don't know, I don't think they'd ever seen a woman in a uniform." - SPC Billie Grimes.
Very well made and put together. Not a fan of the lacklusterness surrounding the situation....come folks you are in Iraq a little urgency!
a little bit of propagande I guess, but the sad looks on those childs were no propaganda. I liked the african-american one with big nose the most. he was the bitterness of war, materialized in the body of a soldier. a good documantry. liked it.
Important documentary that would have had greater impact in the hands of a more focused editor and director.
Not as quite as good or informational or hair raising as some documentaries i've seen about the Iraq situation, but one of the earliest...it was interesting to see it now for the first time, several years after the fact, it seems maybe even MORE relevant now than it might have at the time...
A great documentary which showed most of the events that take place in a daily life of a regular U.S. marine. Some of the brutalities of war were probably cut out but I guess that wasn't the point after all. What was the point was demonstrating the physical and mental hell that comes with being a marine in the modern Iraq war. And based on my knowledge of past war films and soldiers of militaries they will be as unappreciated after the war as they are currently in it. Whether or not the Iraq war is neccesary I still can't say for certain; although I do lean on the pro-war side. It seems that in the end its not whether the war should have been fought or not but how it was fought. So, whatever levels of intelligence these soldiers possess I just hope they are fighting justly and morally.
It could have been longer. this includes extending some great scenes that could have been gems if they where cut properly. there is a wonderful rap soundtrack to this film composed by many of the soldiers stationed in Iraq.
