Harmontown Reviews

I'm a nerd, love comedy and D&D.. this movie is fantastic!

A charming look at a unique podcast blended with the interesting story of Dan Harmon's story as a comedy writer starting with his firing from NBC and the subsequent rehiring. The strong point of the film is it does not hold back on criticism of Harmon himself. In interviews people criticize his work style as well as his short temper, and shows glimpses into his alcoholism and his sometimes abusive relationship with his girlfriend at the time of filming the movie. This doc does nothing more than make me want to listen to some Harmontown.

The beginning of the documentary felt rushed, but the film as a whole is great. Although some shots were questionable and the fade in into 2007 made me think I skipped part of the film, the editing is great. The shot on the highway is just great. And basically, if you like Dan Harmon, you will like this documentary, it's as simple as that.

An intimate behind-the-scenes documentary covering Dan Harmon (creator of Community, co-creator of Rick and Morty) and his short tour of seat-of-the-pants live podcasts in the winter of 2012. It dangles precariously between worshiping the man (via dozens of high-profile testimonials) and vilifying him (the same talking heads almost unanimously have a bad story to tell about his self-destructive nature) which makes for a difficult, conflicted narrative. Especially as he seems to have no interest in seriously changing his ways, even after breaking down and confessing to his many sins. Harmon's connection with his audience, and with his small cast of cobbled-together costars, is special and real, the kind of rapport that thousands of wannabe cult productions chase to their last breath. Maybe his shortcomings as a human fuel that fire in ways that a more composed creative wouldn't, but it still begs a question: how much more prolific could this guy be if he'd ever get his act together? Even his most passionate fans seem to realize that he can be a real dick at times, most notably when he airs the dirty laundry of a late-night fight with his long-suffering girlfriend right there on one show. The same fans who lined up at the door to hear what he'll do or say next agree almost unanimously that he was in the wrong, leaving him to awkwardly eat a little crow. The documentary itself is a bit long, especially in getting to a conclusion, but otherwise does a nice job of mixing laugh-out-loud moments from the stage with heartfelt confessions and closed-door implosions away from the public eye. Great if you're already a fan, but a little narrow and long-winded if you're not.

An interesting film documenting an "army of nerds with hearts of love" that seems to be part informative, part tragedy, and part inspirational in equal measure.

Mostly boring, would be more interesting if you listen to the podcast. Some inspiring bits, but mostly just depressing ramblings of an overly creative writer. Watched at home on Netflix, June 1, 2015.

Self-indulgent, overstuffed and glossed with a false heart. Only the last half an hour is watchable for anyone less than a die hard Harmon fanboy.

Genius.- A genius is a person who displays exceptional superior intellectual ability, creativity, or originality. If you look into Dan Harmon's work you will find exactly that.he's the epitome of artistic freedom.even if he's never making it big.I think we will always have his best legacy to the world: Community. if you're not a fan of comedy.forget it.you don't wanna watch this.

Dan Harmon may be one of the most eccentric, talented, crazed creators working today, evident from the large and extensive body of work on display in this documentary. The film follows a tour that Harmon embarks on with his co-hosts, from his podcast, Harmontown. Along the way they meet fans, talk out issues, and revel in general merriment. A great look inside the tortured soul of an entertainer but sometimes a angry pig is just an angry pig.

This is a pretty interesting documentary about Dan Harmon, the creator of the 온라인카지노추천 show Community; it goes in some unexpected directions and isn't purely flattering to Harmon. There are some things I wish the film had focused on more than it ultimately did; but as a look at the personal life of a popular artist and his relationship to his fans, it's definitely worthwhile. As you probably already know if you're a fan of Community, Harmon ran the show for three seasons, was fired from the fourth season (a fact that the show suffered immensely from), and was re-hired for the fifth and (now) sixth seasons. The reasons why he was fired become apparent over the course of this documentary - Harmon is, among other things, a lazy, volatile, sometimes bitter man, with something resembling a serious drinking problem. The film is somewhat invested in portraying Harmon as a tortured genius, which to a certain extent it seems he is - as we know from comparing the fourth season of Community to the others, his input on the show is apparently invaluable. This documentary was filmed during Harmon's off-time from that fourth season, when he and a few other people took his podcast Harmontown (which I have never listened to) on a tour of live shows across the country. The live shows themselves don't look like they were actually all that entertaining - apparently there really was no plan for each performance, and the whole thing is built purely on improvisation and audience interaction. However, the actual documentary around the shows is pretty fascinating, especially when it focuses on Spencer Crittenden, a young neckbeard (sorry, there's no better word for him) who joins the tour as a dungeonmaster for on-stage games of Dungeons and Dragons, or on the audience of Harmon fans. The film is at its most interesting and poignant when it focuses on the fans themselves, and provides some reflection on the generally under-explored question of what draws certain groups of people to certain cultural phenomena. Ultimately, watching the film isn't as entertaining an experience as actually watching Community itself; but I do recommend it to any fans of the show.

A fairly interesting look into a comedian I was previously unfamiliar with and his approach to show business.

A great character piece about two unusual people

Dan Harmon, comedy writer and creator of Community follows the Conan O'Brien model of getting fired by NBC then going on a live tour. The difference being that Conan is a born performer whereas Harmon is a sweet neurotic, alcoholic, small S sociopath. Harmon is also a painfully honest person and that causes the film to be a phenomenal study of a extremely talented but almost as extremely damaged human being. I am very glad Community is coming back because it is a great show but, now, because based on my observations of this film Dan Harmon may have killed himself with booze if it hadm't

Exactly what I wanted. Thank you.

A rather balanced and vulnerable film about a controversial and compelling subject. For a big fan of NBC's Community, it felt like Harmontown was made for me. I find Dan Harmon to be one of the most unique and talented writers working in 온라인카지노추천 today. He thinks so as well. What Harmontown does so well, besides being so entertaining, insightful, and funny, it shows the brokenness within the self-proclaimed genius. This isn't a pretty, "rah rah" kind of documentary. At times it glorifies his humorous and creative spirit, at other times it's a scathing indictment of his behavior and ego. I really appreciate a documentary that doesn't paint its subject as either evil or good, but shows both sides of a compelling personality. Harmontown is that kind of film.

Perhaps not for the uninitiated, but I loved it.
