Misconceived, badly acted and sloppily directed.

Whatever Newman and co-author Ronald L. Buck were trying to say about the frustrations and fears of growing old and the chasms of the generation gap have been undercut by an assortment of characters who don't seem to exist in the real world.

The result is a curiously indigestible phenomenon, like being forced to eat five courses of avocado by an overbearing dinner-party host.

Mr. Newman, who also co-wrote the script, has staged some effective comic scenes in an effort to temper the film's overpowering get-out-your-hand-kerchief conclusion.

One of the few films Paul Newman directed and the only one he co-wrote, Harry & Son wanders around a fractured relationship before finding a few moments of purity

Without having big ambitions, Harry & Son manages to be charming because of its modesty and good quality. [Full Review in Spanish]

It is a film that reunites some superb moments, and all of them come from the excellent acting work, of an incredible naturalness guided by Newman's direction. [Full Review in Spanish]

The film is definitely overlong, bordering on the dull.

Fuzzily conceived and indecisively executed, Harry & Son represents a deeply disappointing return to the director's chair for Paul Newman.
