Harvard Man Reviews
I wanted to like this movie. If has a few moments and even a great idea for a plot. Sadly, it just doesn't pull through. I hated the beginning of the film so that's why it left a bad taste in my mouth. Not to give away anything, but has anyone ever played a sport, skipped warm-ups, missed most of the game, with no excuse, yet the coach still puts you in to play? Um, no. Case Closed.
It is really, really, really.... bad.
Funny scenes with LSD from someone who actually knows what it is like. But a bit too much bloody talking,
Harvard's star basketball player, Alan (Adrian Grenier), is pushing his luck. He must hide one girlfriend, Cindy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), the daughter of a mob boss, from his other girlfriend, Chesney (Joey Lauren Adams), his promiscuous Philosophy professor. Alan's escapades finally catch up with him when his family faces dire financial difficulty. To remedy the situation, Alan asks Cindy to approach her mobster father for a loan. He offers the money on one condition: throw the next game. While Alan contemplates the idea, he must juggle two girlfriends, deal with the mob, and face the FBI. also stars Rebecca Gayheart, Eric Stoltz, Ray Allen, Michael Aparo, Adam Bloch and Gianni Russo. directed by James Toback.
This received 2 stars instead of one purely because of Sarah Michelle Gellar. She plays bad so well. This movie stinks. The cutesy camera angles and effects did nothing for me. The acting was pretty atrocious. Have you ever wondered what makes actors choose to be in movies like this? What was going through SMG's head when she agreed to be in this trash? Money? Trying to break the "good girl" inmage from Buffy? Rent Cruel Intentions for a better movie with SMG as a bad girl.
This film is best watched from the acid intake on, and taken more as a fun and confused journey than a serious cinematic affair. Follow these simple rules and maybe watch it slightly disoriented at 2 or 3 in the morning and you will enjoy it
I found the movie rather fun. The line-up was pretty great. Storyline was definitely imperfect, but not extremely flawed. Overall, fun.
ok, but i seen sarah michelle gellar in much better movies. i get what they were trying to say with this movie but there are better ways that they could have done it.
Off-beat and slick, 'Harvard Man' never comes together as a drama or a comedy, but it succeeds in style and an over-the-top energy that makes it fully entertaining and wildly undiciplined. The cast is terrific in other roles, but most fall flat to the dialogue that's as rapid and nonsensical as the film itself.
This movie was just weird. To clarify how weird, think about how a movie would be if half of it was the character on acid. The only thing stopping me from outright calling it stupid is the fact that it's weird.
