House Reviews

Woah this movie is weird. After reading some reviews I got interested and watched the movie, and it was certainly an experience. There’s something so fascinating about it all, the special effects are certainly dated, and the directing of the movie is overall confusing and strange, but a lot of the visuals were really cool. I finished the movie and just had to sit there for a moment and think about what I just watched. Now, I will admit, I did enjoy this movie, but it is certainly not for everyone. If you like more abnormal and artsy films, I would recommend this one, it’s like a fever dream. If not, probably don’t watch it, you’ll be so so weirded out. For horror fans - this movie isn’t all that scary and is more comical than frightening haha (Also the underage nudity was super weird😬)

I can’t get over how many people love this movie. I guess more ppl take LSD than I thought?! This movie can have a strong purpose however - if you wish to dump your significant other, force them to watch this. I may divorce my husband after he forced me to watch this nonsense. I also now hate music after finishing this.

Avant-garde and beyond logical comprehension, 'Hausu' is a gleeful romp into insanity with a surprisingly tender heart.

The best way to describe House is as an exercise in tomfoolery. Though it starts out with potential and is a visual stunner, this film could greatly benefit from less condisending tones or any sort of intellectual payout in the end.

Quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. The only reason I watched this was that Rotten Tomatoes listed this as the 12th best horror movies of the 70s. Seriously? Not even close. Story was juvenile. Acting was not good. Special effects looked like a bad HR Pufnstuff show. The special effects actually reminded me of the bad Star Wars Christmas special. Ugh. Please don't bother with this one.

Here's an informal 1.5-star review of *Hausu* (1977) in 150 words: --- Watching *Hausu* is like entering a fever dream where nothing makes sense, and everything is just plain bizarre. The film attempts to be a horror-comedy, but the humor often feels forced and the scares are more laughable than terrifying. The plot follows a group of schoolgirls who visit a haunted house, but the story quickly devolves into a chaotic mishmash of bizarre visuals and absurd scenes. The special effects are incredibly dated and cheesy, making it hard to take any of the horror elements seriously. Characters lack depth, and their exaggerated reactions only add to the film's surreal nature. While some might appreciate the campy charm and psychedelic style, the disjointed narrative and over-the-top antics left me confused and underwhelmed. Overall, *Hausu* might be a cult classic for some, but its strange execution didn't quite hit the mark for me.

Sort of a Hansel and Gretal retelling but with cute Japanese girls. The girls are pretty, the movie is goofy. Stars for the girls.

Bizarre, offbeat and zany, HOUSE is a wild horror movie with dark comedy that any horror fan should go into blind. It's a weird and wonderful experience, and a remarkable look at classic Japanese horror.

A truly unforgettable viewing experience. The constantly shifting style and tone captures the dream logic of childhood beautifully. People will sometimes say "You've never seen anything like this" in regards to certain movies but this is one of those even rarer times where it happens to be true.

I'm all for weirdness, but this was a bit too much for me. Everything save the cat was annoying, esp. the overuse of music. Overall, why take LSD when you can watch this?

House, a.k.a., The Longest & Weirdest Music Video Ever Made, is the kind of thing you think of when you consider the most stereotypically over the top Japanese entertainment. It's an experimental film, full of early days special effects, unique sound design and lots and lots of visual oddness. I liked how the movie had music playing at almost all times, which is an effective way of maintaining the consistently upbeat and zany tone, as well as preventing things becoming dull in its slower moments. If you prefer your narratives straightforward and uncluttered, this isn't the film for you. It's more of a series of bizarre events designed to show off the creator's imagination than a coherent story with a 3-act structure. Expect crazy imagery, frantic editing and a complete detachment from anything even resembling reality. If that sounds like your kind of thing, then I'd say you should definitely give it a shot.

Strange, bizarre and experimental go in knowing nothing is what it seems.

absolute trash, in what world is this a movie worth praising. this movie is everything people criticize about horror movies. plotless, stupid, just ridiculous and over the top for the sake of it. totally stupid movie that doesnt deserve any praise.

It is certainly different, but not entirely in a good way.

A sensitive Horror Comedy with a bright IQ This movie revitalized Horror in a way that wasn't seen again until more modern times when movies took Horror elements and added Comedy. Compare it with "The Lost Boys" of movies where young actors and actresses stretch screen time with their antics and immature behaviors. However, the stylistic shooting and cinematography really takes over the pacing of the film and leaves the audience watching on for the appeal of the graphics, rather than the dark bleakness of the story. Its bright colors and drawn-in graphics are practical and enjoyable. As it follows the young girls through the haunted house, there are moments of cringe-worthy hilarity and over-the-top gore and blood. With it all meshed together, it's a tour-de-force of Horror/Comedy.

Well that was interesting. A combination of 70s kung ku and a psychedelic mind trip with cartoonish style of edits. I really want to like it and its weirdness. I think I need to rewatch it again sometime.

It takes a while to get going, the acting's pretty shaky, there aren't any actual scares, the effects are unrealistic, some of the cuts are puzzling and what the intentions are is anyone's guess (though there could be an argument for the bare-bones script's symbolic value). Yet the effects, editing and visuals are also charmingly wacky, creative or even impressive both in their conception and execution, and certain scenes (e.g. the piano sequence) stand out as highly memorable and influential.

I really cannot tell whether this was a good movie or a bad movie, but I have to admit it was original.
