Head Count Reviews
HEAD COUNT is a really good and genuinely scary horror film that is light on gore, but not light on thrills. An existential slasher killer stalking a crew of friends with the new guy unleashing horror on them all

A unique and dynamic psychological horror movie... I am excited to see what's next from [writer and director Elle Callahan].
| Original Score: 7/10 | Oct 27, 2020
All that said, Head Count is an impressive debut. Elle Callahan has crafted a minimalist, modern age ghost story that should be told in hushed whispers around the campfire.

Here the atmosphere works, the majority of the characters work well with each other and with the story, the story is fairly simple thus easy to follow, and the tension builds up until the reveal.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 4, 2020
Suspenseful horror movie has a lot of profanity, drinking.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 2, 2019
The longer you stick with Head Count, the more you become immersed in what should be remembered as one of the best horror movies of 2019.

Stylish but confusing comedic thriller.

Head Count could have been a generic and familiar supernatural horror, but writer Michael Nader and director Elle Callahan do an exceptional job of fleshing out the main characters and crafting smart, unsettling scares.
| Jun 17, 2019
Favoring psychological chills over blood-soaked mayhem, Callahan's impressively crafted debut nods to recent horror classics while displaying an eminently distinctive vision of its own.

While Head Count shows potential and has some really good high level thoughts, there's just not enough scares to bring the film to life in a meaningful way.

Not quite the head trip it purports to be, Head Count is more likely to have you counting minutes until it's over.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 14, 2019
Once the Hisje begins working its way through these kids - needing to take five souls before it can be satisfied - "Head Count" becomes a solidly made, often quite scary horror picture.

... builds modest suspense but never develops its characters with any urgency, nor does it bother explaining much about the enigmatic intruder.
| Jun 14, 2019
The debut feature of director Elle Callahan is a clever little chiller, based in an urban legend ... and crafted with a keen sense of staging.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 14, 2019
It's an admirably disciplined film with committed performances by actors playing characters more complicated than the usual horror casualty list.

Elle Callahan's Head Count is a steaming bowl of California "Creepypasta" served up hot n' fresh for horror fan consumption.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jun 5, 2019
Unfortunately, not all of the film's characters are sketched as deeply as others and the film is ultimately weighed down by a collection of milquetoast, unmemorable characters the audience will find difficulty telling apart from one another.

Head Count is a fun horror movie that reveals the potential duplicity and capacity for evil in all of us, a light-hearted genre romp destined to please those amongst us with a soft spot for low-budget indie horror filmmaking.

...there's enough good here to make the less-good aspects forgivable: you root for Evan and Zoe to be a couple who last, and outlast.
