Heathers Reviews

May 14, 2025

A very good dark comedy subversion of the typical 80s highschool movies. While the problems in those stories seemed like life and death to the "teenage" characters, in this movie it decides to really make it so. (Early-Spoilers) In the first act of the movie, the leader of the titular "Heathers," Heather, is accidentally killed by Winona Ryder's Veronica after some bad advice and slide-of-hand of her situationship, Christian Slater's JD. From there, the movie follows Veronica dealing with the situation, and the spiralling fallout of her and JD's actions, with all the attitudes of an angsty teen. While Slater gives a somewhat weaker performance, the acting by the rest of the cast is excellently done. Slater and Ryder have great onscreen chemistry, even as their relationship evolves and changes over the course of the film. Because the movie kills off one of the titular characters in the first third of the movie, it subverts many of the expectations an audience might have had watching a teenage 80s movie, so the audience never knows what's going to happen next. It takes this opportunity and runs with it, letting the darker comedy shine through even brighter.

"Heathers" stands out as a stinging social satire that cleverly dissects the brutal dynamics of high school hierarchies with dark humor and cutting wit. Its dream-like qualities, from the surreal dialogue to the vividly stylized aesthetics, create an unsettling yet captivating atmosphere that draws viewers into its twisted world. These elements not only critique the societal pressures of adolescence but also establish it as a unique cult favorite that resonates with audiences long after the credits roll.

Heathers is one of the best dark comedy movies ever. Winona Ryder & Christian Slater kill it, Literally. But the whole cast is great, the writing is great if you love dark, biting, satire. It's commentary on bullying, homophobia & how fake people can be is still just as relevant now as it was then. A timeless classic.

Entertaining, funny, unique, original film with excellent performances from Christian Slater and especially Winona Ryder. A true gem of 90s cinema.

Heathers is outstanding. Though the plot may be a bit unrealistic, the movie's overall message to the audience is definitely what teens and young adults of today need. Its exaggeration on the themes of suicide make it enjoyable for the audience. Winona Ryder and the rest of the cast were most likely passionate in this project and it paid off.

Such a great movie. From an era where story and characters drove viewing experiences. Loved every moment of this up to an including the Blakes 7esque ending. Magnificent.

If The Breakfast Club was the upbeat and optimistic looks at high school cliques and their function in a young person’s life, then Heathers is the opposite, much darker side of the coin. The screenwriter himself has stated his intention was to counterpoint the positive representation of American high school life, and the film really goes all in on the dark and disturbing satire. Violent and disturbing events are presented with a bizarre flippancy that belies how shocking they would be in real life, but nothing feels too far out of the realm of reality to truly strain believability. Clique infighting, death threats, horrible bullying, jealousy, spite and the never ending quest to achieve popularity, whatever that means or entails, are facts of life for a majority of high school students. If nothing else, it demonstrates how meaningless it is to be popular in high school, since no one can possibly be liked by everyone, and we see how even those who are hailed as the most beloved are actually the most heated. I feel like the film wasn’t really sure how to end, and starts to sputter when the finale is meant to be wrapping up. Also, it’s the kind of story which will resonate much more strongly in American than anywhere else, where the kind of tropes being parodied are most notable. It might come across as forced or artificial to some, but I enjoyed it for its dark comedy, its interesting characters and its unashamed criticism of the high school system.

do people only like heathers because it's from the 80's?

I was 16 when this was released. Everybody in the school watched it at one point or another; most of us loved it, but there were a few who didn't. Those people were exactly like the popular kids in the movie; I guess they weren't fond of how they were portrayed. The truth hurts.

Waters’ script is a remarkable work of art—exceptionally quotable, darkly humorous, and perpetually resonant.

This movie is peak 80's, from the clichés to the dialogue and the end result is a dark satirical cult classic.

This is genuinely one of the best movies I've ever seen, edgy 80's teenage drama is everything I needed, AND THE MUSCIAL SOUNDTRACK?? SO CREATIVE. 100% would reccomend this movie to anyone.

After hearing the musical soundtrack, I knew I had to watch the original movie. Great choice to make. The dark humor is hilarious, and the pacing of the movie is great. JD works as a great “villain” character, and Veronica is portrayed perfectly by Winona. The 80s-edging-90’s vibe is incredible and makes me appreciate older movies, compared to the modern flicks of today. Absolutely would recommend it if you’re looking for a dark, hilarious thriller. And if you’re up for a more song-oriented version of the classic, I would also recommend watching the musical. Same story, just with songs to fill in the key plot points. 4.5/5
