It is difficult to manage the genius and the illness.
Scattershot in execution, but uplifted by the charming charisma of Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish.
What's not to like. Professional critics suck at their job. This movie is so enjoyable.
4.0 stars; Thank you Billy Crystal for giving us a movie that made us sincerely laugh and cry.. Not many movies can do that today. What I thought was unique about this movie was how it snuck up on you.. When it first starts out, it's like a Woody Allan comedy... lots of esoteric jokes. So, It was very funny with good punchlines to begin. But after a while, it didn't seem like this movie could go anywhere with this shallow store line. Then all of a sudden, the drama kicks in and the film becomes serious. Somehow, the mixture of comedy and tragic drama worked so well with an excellent script by Crystal and Alan Zweibel. I thought the concept in itself was so clever. The plot involves a comedy writer who is developing dementia in his later stage of life. His challenge is to try to capture his life in writing before he forgets it. The acting was excellent, as you would expect.
Writer-director Billy Crystal provides a genuine humorous draw in smoothly building up the story's true emotional center that sensitively tackles and speaks volumes with harrow introspection hardening the sympathetic direction. Resonates satisfyingly stemming from the eventual thematic connection by relation via outer perspective, ending with a meaningful statement capping the solid script. Honestly the first half finds casual chemistry fueled jokingly with enough edge towards its given rating till the second half finds the characters in better conditions as they started performing their best under serious turns with empathetic tears reacting to the given struggles they're facing. You'd mainly expect the humorous comedy's generational clash stirring a nice chemistry from the two comedic leads, but you'll be surprised at how they tackle their chosen topic with such capably firm grip. (B+)
Funny, heartwarming, riveting....Billy and Tiff are truly awesome.
Omg this was not a good movie. Felt like an aged vanity project for Billy Crystal
This is a very touching story. It can be funny. It can be sad. It can make you angry. It can make you feel happy. I think it's unfortunate that critics seem unable to accept that a film can cover a range of human emotions and stay held together tightly.
Uneven at points, but overall a lovely look at an older man facing late in life mental issues and the person that he meets that keeps him tethered. May we all find someone like her as we near the end.
Amazing how a drama is handled with such sensitivity and sweetness,as the story unfolds you get to find yourself as part of a story and realise how important forgiveness is.Funny moments also render it pleasing and an easy to watch movie.Absolutely must see!
Very sweet, very real, very nice. And, funny.
A very nice movie combing both comedy and drama at a great proportion. All actors are great. A must see in my opinion
I thought it was a great movie about friendship between a young black woman and an older white man. Purely friendship and love for each other. It displayed healing and passion and forgiveness. Loved It!!
An actual ‘laugh out loud' comedy which, sadly, is a rarity today. It evoked the ‘right kind of laugh' and was an intelligent, amusing and sensitive take on several themes such as experience vs youthful exuberance, mentoring of emergent talent and empathy with degenerative illness. This film has a generosity of spirit that is also rare these days. The relationship between the two protagonists was one of those platonic and beautiful friendships that aren't supposed to exist these days if you listen to the gossipers and measly minded among us. There was one blip in this where it seemed their relationship had become more which felt at odds with the rest of the sentiment of the film. But I can forgive this, since the rest of the film was simply wonderful. Thank you to all involved for giving us some good honest entertainment for a change!
This is a bit of a mish mash of a film. It has some funny moments and sad moments too but it felt a bit too bland mid way through, so I can't say I was exactly gripped by it. It took a while before I really laughed, which isn't good for a film primarily categorised as a comedy and the whole inter generational (age gap) aspect felt a bit cliche. It's certainly cheesy at the end and I'd even say it has the feel of an afternoon 온라인카지노추천 film about it but it's not all bad. It covers some decent themes and it sort of means well. I liked one scene in particular, where Charlie interupts live 온라인카지노추천 and has a bit of a vent. I feel like this could have been a better film, it has some promise but it doesn't really work properly, not as far as I'm concerned anyway. The cast is decent and there's some witty dialogue but its far from memorable or stand out, so overall I wouldn't recommend this film, no.
Everything about Here Today seemed forced. The relationship between Haddish and Crystal was wooden and scripted. What should have been a heart string tugger....just wasn't.
Schmaltzy, saccharine, sickly sweet. Beyond unbelievable, scene after scene. And populated with young characters (Charlie's granddaughter and a comedy writer he's mentoring) who radiate a naive wholesomeness that exists only on the Hallmark channel. Here's all you need to know: there were three different closeups of the actors' hands as they grasped hands tightly during some emotional scene. Better than 1 out of 5 thanks to a few well-written jokes. Overall, can't recommend it to those with sugar allergies.
The first half of the movie had me rolling in laughter every minute! The second half had me in tears. Great movie and story.
A very well done treatment of dementia with some excellent comic relief expertly delivered by Billy Crystal & Tiffany Haddish. I recommend.
