High Ground Reviews

Beautifully shot, immersive sound design and a gripping story. A brilliant Australian Western.

The movie looks great but unfortunately lacks any real depth to either the storyline or the characters. A strong start is let down by a long lethargic second and third act.

Stunning but not over the top cinematography, a pared back but absorbing plot, excellent acting, some historical context and cultural exploration, and a bit of a western shoot ‘em up vibe. I’d watch it again. Good stuff. Warning though, Scenes based on actual massacres of Aboriginal people.

Pretty good. Not your average movie.

A very eye opening movie that needs to be shown to all Australians

As an Australian this was a story that we were not taught in school. I went to the theatre a second time the very next day as it was so compelling. As confronting as it is I feel the story is reflected in the history of a lot of countries that were colonised. A very beautiful movie that everyone should see.

Simon Baker & Jacob Junior Nayinggul Give Solid Performances in Visually Stunning Aussie Aboriginal Revenge Tale: "High Ground," directed by Stephen Johnson, is a visually stunning Aussie Aboriginal revenge film based on true events story set in 1919 involving a British Colonial massacre of an Aboriginal tribe/family in Northern Territory Australia. 12 years later, a young survivor of the massacre, Gutjuk (Jacob Junior Nayinggul), being raised in a white mission, teams up with former soldier Travis (Simon Baker) to track down the other massacre survivor, Gutjuk's uncle Baywara (Sean Mununggurr), a warrior with a revenge streak who is on the run. Terrific supporting cast that includes veteran Aussie 온라인카지노추천 & Film actor Aaron Pedersen and legendary Australian actor Jack Thompson. Kudos to Cinematographer Andrew Commis, known for previous work as DP on "Babyteeth" and "The Slap," for his extraordinary job on "High Ground" capturing the beauty of Australia's Northern Territory.

Just can't get through the political nonsense.

Really enjoyed this movie. Gritty and raw. Fantastic scenery too.

I really enjoyed this movie, much so more than some recent ones I have watched. Great photography and wildlife scenes and whilst the story is socially frightening I welcome the spotlight on the problems that continue on to this day.

Well I'm embarrassed to be white, I won't dare call myself australian. I'd rather have some dignity and say I'm irish even though my only link in 7 generation's ago someone related to me was irish. At least have the indigenous aussie flag as our main flag and change the anthem. Aussies have taken so much away from the original australians at least give all free housing and the flag and a new anthem. That's how you really say sorry. I hope this film gets serious international recognition and cause a global conversation to bring about change.

Tale of a young indigenous Australian boy that is forced to reconcile what happened to his family after he's taken in by the white man and then used to hunt down his family later.

Gut wrenching. Thrilling. A story that needs to be told to all Australians. It may not be one man's story but one intertwined with so much of untold history we haven't anywhere acknowledged enough. I left feeling my gut truly ache, burning, sickened at the reality this is our nations history.

as an australian and a passionate Aboriginal advocate i wanted this movie to be outstanding but came away thinking it was a low budget compromise on what could have been. multiple continuity issues with time, cringeworthy script and lack of attention to detail such as impeccably clean uniforms in a harsh, rugged and deprived outback location. Some acting was ok but for the most part i came away thinking this was rubbish.

This movie was powerful beyond expectations. Casting perfect. Cinematography perfect. Story perfect. Relevance perfect. Such a visual treat, really get to see the amazing beauty as well as the disturbing realities of Australia. A must see. Will watch again and again.

If you want to truly pay your respects to the traditional owners of the land, this film is a must-see. It honestly portrays the perspective of being in 1930s Australia, not showing either side as being right or wrong. Every Australian must see this movie.

This movie was sensational. It was quite confronting but truthful. I am grateful to finally have even a little bit of understanding into what the Indigenous people have gone through for the last 1000 years or more. It is absolutely disgusting what they had to go through and continue to go through. I love the Indigenous culture and hope to one day learn more about it. This movie is now my #1 favourite movie of all time. It also feels great to be able to support Australian film.

Beautiful cinematography, great scenery, confronting reminder of how bad white men treated First Nations people on arrival in Australia. Great performances from First Nations actors. We need to keep telling these stories so people truly understand we still have a long way to go to deal with systemic racism.

High Ground is not just a great Australian film but one that stands as a great film. A film of sweeping power and high emotion. A great portrayal of our dark and turbulent history. Set in the Northern Territory the film begins in 1919 with an operation gone wrong. Travis, an NT policeman, loses control of an operation that results in the massacre of an Indigenous tribe. There are survivors though. Baywara, a young man and Gutjuk, a young boy. Travis leaves the force in disgust but is forced back twelve years later to hunt down Baywara, whose attacks on new settlers are causing havoc. Meanwhile Gutjuk, who was raised on a mission, joins with Travis to hunt down Baywara. But as the film progresses we learn more about the past events and recriminations occur. This superb film is powerful and striking, robust and emotional. A film of rugged beauty and dire consequences. A reminder of our dark past and how the Indigenous population have been treated. The film is brutal at times but there is also beauty, mainly because of the setting. Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land is filmed spectacularly with great care and attention. The location is definitely a star of the film. Highly recommend this great Australian film.
