Holding the Man Reviews
Beautiful and heartbreaking movie, loved it.
Didn’t cry- wept. No notes, just tissues.
This is amazing movie! Not only based on a true story but written by one on the people in the story. It is an emotional roller coaster of feelings from beginning to end.
Just a lovely film. I was on the verge of tears watching it. It's a beautiful story and very well acted and I appreciate that one of the lead actors is actually gay in his personal life.
A tragic love story with powerful, tear inducing, compelling performances from Craig Stott and Ryan Corr. As someone who hardly cries to movies, by the end I found myself in a river of my own tears. Daalu! Thank you!
Loved the film, especially Ryan Corr's performance as the late Tim Conigrave. I know that on one can ever replace Heath Ledger as the most talented actor to come out of Australia in the 21st century, but damn, Corr comes tantalizingly close. This is more of a showcase for his gifts and he gets a chance to run the gamut of emotions; Craig Stott isn't given a lot to do as Caleo, other than react to Tim Conigrave (Corr). He's underused here. A rather handsome young man, one wants to see what else he is capable of as an actor. Their best scenes together are in the early days of the Tim/John romance; the love scenes are romantic and their expression of puppy love is quite sweet and moving. The film structure is a bit hard to follow, jumping from the 70s to the 80s, back to the 70s and then to the 90s, but the overall heart of the film is so strong and you know how tragic it will become, you almost don't want the film to move forward towards the AIDS epidemic (which it does, without mercy) and towards its devastating conclusion.
Just watched this on Netflix, Somehow I missed this movie. Its superb. Incredible performances, great soundtrack, totally well constructed movie. The two guys would have been so happy with this fantastic project which tells the story of their 15 years of love. I was so moved. so emotional. It was a film from the heart, for the heart. Highly recommended.
Honestly, one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, I cry every time I watch it! As a queer Australian it's one of the few films I can relate to and the astounding story, based on real life, is amazing. 10/10 do recommend, I'm writing this as I watch it for like the 5th time!!
An Australian romantic drama adapted from the memoir of Timothy Conigrave, which recounts the story of how he met his partner John at high school in the 80s, how their romance endured for 15 years despite countless challenges like separations, discrimination, temptations, jealousies before finally succumbing to the AIDS pandemic. A tragic but emotional story full of astonishing and gripping performances that make it truly realistic and which takes the time to make the audience relate to the couple long enough to generate an honest feeling of sadness and empathy. Even after their death, their memory lives on.
So poor in so many ways.
While the plot is a harrowing and sad view into sufferers of HIV/AIDs, the execution of this is a bit half-hearted. I appreciated the latter half of this story more than the first. Whoever thought that putting the grown men with long wigs and shaved stubble was enough to make them look like students (when every other actor looked like genuine students) should perhaps get a rain-check on makeup. They looked like grown men! The cheesy dialogue is quite awkward when coupled with the issues of coming out and the virus. It had potential but as it stands, it could have been done better.
A beautifully tragic and moving tale that reminds me the value of living life not to it's longest but to the fullest.
Sad as hell but it didn't hold my attention. I had no idea it was a true story until the credits so that's probably what saved this movie from only getting two stars. My heart goes out to these two. May their love live forever.
A movie everyone in this day should be able to watch and totally enjoy!
As someone who lived through this - I have to say that the movie is pitch perfect.
A must see movie which deals with a number of very sensitive and personal issues and specifically same sex relationships, love and HIV and AIDS. We must NOT forget.
