Hope Floats Reviews

May 17, 2025

Extremely underrated Romance movie. It remains totally true to the Romantic genre and never pretends to be anything else. But like the old movies before scripts became less important than the stars and "ratings", it uses a strong core of drama to pull it together. A hefty dose of realism and the pain of divorce which is still relevant, hits the heart. Forrest Whittaker's direction combines the importance of "place" with poignant close-ups. It helps to be taken away to old-school towns with lush forests and shimmering heat! It's not "smaltzy" as many critics smugly ripped it. It's a movie that shows where there is romance, there is always hope.

A long, protracted story that never really peaks. The schmaltzy, angsty emotional states don't help either, as nothing really resolves, and most of the characters aren't developed enough to show us anything remotely close to depth. As such, all efforts fall short, and it ends up being a disappointing, forgettable film

I disagree with most critics and find myself instead very close to several common people. Ok it is not a masterpiece but is a hearthwarming movie with a great Sandra Bullock. What I liked most is that it manages to be a movie not just about a single theme as many other movies, even acclaimed ones, are. Sandra is a desirable sexy woman, an abandoned wife, a depressed person, a mom having to deal with complicated parenting issues, a job-seeker, a goofy character, a daughter in need of her parents’ comfort, has to deal with old friendships good and bad…all at the same time - and does all of it convincingly. In other words, resembles a real person in the real world. I think this is uncommon in movies. And it shows, not a perfect happy life or happy ending, but simply that by sticking to your humanity and true values, relying on the persons close to you, you can manage to live a decent (not perfect) life in spite of many bumps. Not a bad movie at all.

Good drama that makes you cry

Great job and this cute sad and then happy movie, kinda wish you could have played out more of her first marriage to get everyone more shocked.

This movie is one of my all time favorites of Sandra Bullock. Speed, 28 days, hope floats, miss congeniality, lost city, and more. Every movie she is in, is a smash hit.

So cheesy, absolutely no plot. There were so many loose ends and unexplained turns of events, I couldn't form a connection with any of the characters.

Bullock and Gena Rowlands pull it off

A 90's classic. Has all the feels and reminds us that beginnings are scary, endings are usually sad, but it's the middle that counts the most.

Cute, sweet, deeper than most rom coms. Includes the sweetness sadness and humor of dysfunctional family life

I usually like Sandra Bullock movies, but not this time. This movie was so boring and really disappointing.

Wow this is a bad movie. It does the almost impossible and makes Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr unlikeable. If it was intended as a study of bad parenting it succeeded, but in all other ways it fails. Predatory pursuit of a just-betrayed woman, who mysteriously suddenly gets over the break up and rides off into the fireworks as if it wouldn't be a disastrous rebound, schmaltzy soundtrack disappointing from Don Was, and a happy ending that comes out of nowhere and has not been earned. The only good thing I can say is that the child actors are excellent. Two hours I spent thinking it would get better and should have spent on something else.

I wouldn't exactly call "Hope Floats" groundbreaking, but it sure as heck deserves a much higher rating then it got on here. This is a perfect example of why I always say that you can't always go by what the critic's rate a movie. First, you have the magnificent Gena Rowland's, then you have a young Mae Whitman who in my opinion was the best child actress since Natalie Wood. Then of course you have the charming and capable Sandra Bullock. I'm not sure who the little boy actor was in this movie, but he was also very good. Sometimes in movies where you have children who are a decent focal point it can ruin the movie because a lot of child actors are annoying. However, it's the complete opposite for this movie. "Hope Floats" is real, heartwarming, sad, funny and completely charming. Sure, the hunky love interest may have left something to be desired from an acting standpoint, but he was also up against some real acting powerhouses here. This is one of those movies that leaves you with a smile and a tear and feeling genuinely uplifted. You'll remember this movie for all the right reasons. It's not afraid to show the messy and sometimes unflattering parts of life, either. The down right raw and heartbreaking realities that everyone has to face from time to time and that's one of the things that makes this movie stand out. Life isn't always pretty and neither are we. This movie is a gem.
