Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard The characters in this movie are charmers. They've got me so well-trained, I'm even looking forward to HTTYD3. Rated: 3/5 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Leslie Felperin Radio Times It has a richness that's highly compelling, especially in the way it explores the complex relationship between man and beast. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The filmmakers borrow freely from Avatar, Sword In The Stone and even Brave but they bring enough vigour and imagination to their storytelling to get away with it. Rated: 4/5 Jul 10, 2014 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The How to Train Your Dragon series is one of DreamWorks Animation’s proudest achievements, and the second film is a darker, more mature and just as gripping as the first. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film What Dean DeBlois was able to do with the first How to Train Your Dragon was just incredible and has become big favorite of mine since then. There was some huge expectations for How to Train Your Dragon 2 and boy did Deblois deliver. Rated: A Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film Boasting beautiful animation, a great script, wonderful voice talent, and one of the year’s best musical scores, this earns its dragon’s wings buy not only improving on its predecessor, but it makes the first film even better. Allie F I really loved the first movie - there were so many memorable parts! It felt like this one took a bit to warm up to things, and the sense of awe and cuteness didn't quite hit me as much as in the first movie. But still lovable and entertaining! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/22 Full Review Dominic D How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a masterpiece. If you haven't seen it, I recommend this movie 1000%. The film starts fun, continuing to expand on the world, discovering new lands and new dragons. The villain in this movie makes you hate him with his actions; the action scenes are well thought out and bring the intensity. There are a few twists that make you go WOW! The romance and emotion this movie brings are intense. This was the first animated movie I cried to, and I thought it connected and brought you closer to all the characters and dragons, making you love each character in their own way. My favorite character was Stoic and his new dragon, Skull Crusher. They brought an intense energy and emotion to every scene, making you truly understand who he was as a character. This movie has plenty more to offer that I don't want to spoil. I again recommend this movie to anyone and everyone if you like great storytelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Mike V The training is over. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a 2014 American animated fantasy film. Produced by Warner Animation Group and written and directed by Dean DeBlois, it is the second installment in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. 🐉 Not bad, but not my favourite either 😉It’s ok, but I feel mixed about this one 😉I’d recommend it if you like this genre, but if not then probably give it a miss 👍🏼👎🏼 Five years have passed since Hiccup and Toothless united the dragons and Vikings of Berk. Hiccup and Toothless find themselves at the center of a battle to protect Berk from a power-hungry warrior. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Robert R God, I was so close to giving this a similar rating as the first one, but there's just something about the simplicity of that 2010 effort that I think is missing this time around. There's appropriate development here and there (especially with that of Hiccup's continued coming-of-age), but I also feel like a bit too much of a reliance on the retcon for my tastes. The animation and emotionality this time around, however, could not be any better. I feel like with animated movies that we consider being for "both kids and adults," all eyes either drift toward Disney or Disney by way of Pixar, but, man, these movies push boundaries with regard to what it wants its audience to process and I respect the hell out of the decisions made here. Also, on that note, shoutout to Djimon Hounsou for delivering a legitimately mature and menacing performance. . .in this kids movie lol. Guy did not need to go as hard as he did, but he really went there and, again, I respect it. Now, if these movies could stop making me weepy, that'd be great. It's all that "boy and his dog" energy, man. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Jonathan K I don’t think this franchise is for me. Neither the first one nor this sequel really landed -- just not my thing. Maybe it's the voice acting. Honestly, if you told me the main character was voiced by Christian Slater with some marbles in his mouth, I’d believe you. The voices don't match the characters' appearances and it ends up being a thoroughly unnatural distraction. The animation, to be fair, is very good. Probably looked exceptional ten years ago when it came out, and the lighting in particular is impressive. But the world itself just doesn’t click with me. And the humor... well, there pretty much isn’t any. It’s an adventure animation that forgot to bring along the comedic relief character. And the soundtrack with the Jonsi vibe feels way too peppy and hyper-positive. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Audience Member This was film was really good I was pretty sad when this movie had some sad scenes but I really enjoyed it I had a fun time I kinda wish that the pasting was not that fast in the final battle but I thought it was really good yeah I think 8/10 feels right for this one go watch it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
