Nevenka Fern谩ndez was 23 years old when she started working at the City Council of Ponferrada, a small Spanish city. She was young, beautiful and full of dreams. But the mayor, accustomed to exercising his power, was immediately infatuated with her. Instead of putting up with it, Nevenka stood up and she faced her entire city, the media and the public opinion of a whole country who chose to pigeonhole her and spoke of her as a calculating exploiter, questioning her intimate life and behavior and undermined her dignity. Despite all this controversy, Nevenka Fern谩ndez obtained the first conviction for sexual harassment of a politician in Spain in 2002.

(ENGLISH) Soy Nevenka is a film that captures the anguish and suffering of its protagonist with an emotional precision that resonates deeply. Mireia Oriol shines in her portrayal of Nevenka, subtly conveying the vulnerability and strength of a woman confronting a hostile environment. Urko Olazabal, on the other hand, delivers a performance that elicits immediate disdain, commanding the screen with the same intensity he's shown in Detective Tour茅 and Maixabel. While the film could have delved deeper into the nuances of its characters at times, it maintains a tense and respectful narrative toward the real events it portrays. Ic铆ar Bolla铆n directs with meticulous care, crafting a story that, while some may find it somewhat cold, focuses on the importance of the narrative and the dignity of its protagonist. Though some critics point out a lack of risk or an overly academic approach, the film succeeds in its mission to shed light on a key story in the fight against harassment in Spain. It鈥檚 a film that undeniably invites reflection and leaves a mark thanks to its powerful performances. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Genni P Essential viewing, this is a conscientiously-made and well documented portrayal of a real-life politician boss and his abuse of power towards a young woman employee, Nevenka, making her life hell on earth because, while achieving an excellent work record she rejected him after a short relationship which she quickly regretted and tried to exit from, to concentrate on her career. Her subsequent legal action against her boss was not only unprecendented and beyond brave (he was hugely popular in his home district), but impacted on her life afterwards so that she paid a massive personal and professional price for speaking out. Excellent acting and thoroughly absorbing, this true story set in Spain over twenty years ago could not be more topical, today in the UK and in so many countries across the world. The film generates discussion and merits viewing as widely as possible by women and men, politicians and bosses, employees, parents, school and college teachers and students. As the director says, these situations are happening to women every day but the change is that now the responses are different - women are being listened to and some action taken to investigate and expose the perpetrators of such abuses of power. The film also highlights how colleagues and some friends who witness inappropriate behaviour or verbal bullying shy away from speaking out or villify the victim. Now that many more women and some men too are speaking out, such abuses are being taken seriously. A film that is altogether powerful and truly deserves to be seen internationally.
