I Used to Go Here Reviews

Kris Rey's comedy drama is still absolutely worth-watching for its raw authenticity, and its incredible amount of heart. I Used to Go Here is a story that needed to be told, and a much-needed investigation on life at its most real.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 13, 2023

The final act leaves you wondering about the story’s overall ambition, and the late-movie tonal shifts are distracting. Still, there are things to like and Rey dodges a lot of college movie clichés and cheap comedy tropes in telling her story.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 22, 2022

[I Used to Go Here] recycles run-of-the-mill themes and heavily relies on overused stylistic formulas and indie film prescriptions.

...a welcome, warm and fuzzy film that offers a 86 minute hug for anyone who knows how public life can leave you exposed...

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 17, 2021

Rather than a dour existential examination of youth's decay, this instead projects rather a hopeful message wrapped around a leisurely, relaxed sensibility.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 14, 2021

I Used to Go Here is a bittersweet journey for a woman still in search of herself, one that's worth taking for any movie lover who's ever experienced something similar.

| Feb 5, 2021

A solid character comedy with its share of small-to-medium-sized laughs.

| Dec 28, 2020

I Used to Go Here balances its wistful approach to college days with genuine thoughtfulness about adulthood.

| Original Score: B | Nov 16, 2020

What's so funny about the film is that it shows how very little divides your early-twentysomething self from your mid-thirtysomething self - you're never too old to be humiliated.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 10, 2020

Whilst I Used to Go Here asks thorny questions about hypocrisy, consent and professor-student relationships, but it doesn't offer them with a deep answer nor any stinging comic observations in response.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 8, 2020

For a film with two very talented and funny leads in Gillian Jacobs and Jemaine Clement, "I Used to Go Here" is ... surprisingly average.

| Sep 6, 2020

Tries to get by with only charm.

| Original Score: B- | Aug 29, 2020

Writer/director Kris Rey's film argues you should be careful when you go poking at your memories with a stick. The most likely result is that your brain goes full pinata, spewing chunky globs of your perception and self-worth all over your mental carpet.

| Original Score: B | Aug 28, 2020

It's the type of movie that people can enjoy if they're looking for a story where they see what happens during a few days when someone discovers how to reconcile expectations from the past with the realities of today.

| Aug 26, 2020

Far too predictable. The performances were good, but again, a little too cookie-cutter.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 25, 2020

Formulaic, predictable, and I wish it gave me more...

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 25, 2020

For a film with multiple power imbalances, I Used to Go Here never dares betray its light and breezy tone in order to properly explore these toxic relationships in any meaningful way.

| Original Score: 6.5/10 | Aug 20, 2020

It rings true in its depiction of the small scale revelations we are sometimes afforded in life, and the characters are sweet and funny, if not always as profound as they might be.

| Aug 20, 2020

Awkward slice-of-life dramedy has college partying, sex.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 20, 2020

An observant and funny independent film with some very good performances.
