Critics Consensus

Despite its impressive animation and the hilarious antics of the saber-toothed squirrel Scrat, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown comes up short on the storytelling front.

Derek Adams Time Out The storyline wanes towards the end and, from the kids' point of view, the whole package lacks momentum. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Neil Smith BBC.com Carlos Saldanha's mix of race-against-time action and eco-friendly propaganda is actually an improvement on the original, not least for giving its funniest character -- acorn-hunting rodent Scrat -- a lot more to do. Rated: 4/5 Apr 11, 2006 Full Review Philip French Guardian In its untouched-by-human-hand way, it's not bad and, as in the first film, the funniest moments involve the half-rat, half-squirrel Scrat. Apr 8, 2006 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Suffering from the same troubles as Dreamworks’ Madagascar series, the Ice Age movies over-modernize their productions with hip lingo, base humor, nonsensical references, and structures them around thin storytelling. Rated: 1/4 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com I never bought in to this film and found myself regularly distracted by animation that seemed bland and boring. Rated: 2.0/4.0 Sep 11, 2020 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) Vaguely entertaining sequel to the big animated hit of 2002, but a bit flat... Russell H Loses some of the charm of the first one but still a fun time with these characters Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review K G Those times a phenomenal movie comes back for a sequel. And it is my favourite movie out of the whole franchise. You know, global warming is scary, especially that it can lead to a species extinctions & that us what Manny felt worried about - losing his species & family. Manny is also relatable since he can get annoyed by the hilarious Sid. This movie is also about discovering who you are when such as when Ellie the mammoth thought she was possum just like Crash & Eddie - Manny knew who she really was: a mammoth just like him. I love it when Manny knows he is not the only one when a big group of mammoths walk by them. Did you like the ending in which Scrat has a near death experience with Sid saving his life? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/25 Full Review Joey G This was a surprisingly good sequel. I look forward to the next one. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Mark M The story is not as captivating as its predecessor but is somehow enough to keep the audience watching Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Jim P All the other reviews are right. A step down from the first movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Samuel W The first Ice Age is a classic, but the second movie was my favorite movie as a child. Watching it again has made me realize that I remembered every single event and scene as it played out as though I could play it in my own head. The movie is extraordinarily well-done and amps up the emotional undertones of Manny’s history from the first movie. With Will Arnett, Jay Leno, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, and of course, the amazing Queen Latifah joining the herd, the new characters were more than welcome to come aboard their crazy travels. The entire movie is exciting, hilarious, and can make you really tear up a time or two. And for a 2006 movie, the visuals were so excellently well-done.
