In a Lonely Place Reviews

Oct 15, 2024

This lame version of Jekyll and Hyde lacks, besides hairy hands, any mystery about the modus operandi. From the very start Bogie keeps on hitting people in their faces, and then begs for forgiveness. It seems that the text put in the mouths of protagonists is entirely from another movie.Movie like Romeo and Juliet:" I was born when I kissed you,I died when you left me, etc..."

Though initially promising a plot it doesn't eventually deliver, In a Lonely Place makes up for it in other areas, including the thriller elements, the (incomplete) romance, the dialogue, the ending, and most importantly, the subplot that delves into the psyche of the protagonist, who is also portrayed as imperfect, and not so much a hero as the viewer would generally want him to be. The direction and performances add the cherry on top of this many-layered noir cake.

Gloria Grahame as Laurel Gray would have been better off if Bogie had been the killer. What a douche.

Stilted script, stiff acting, no attempt at verisimilitude. Hard to understand the accolades. Loved the late 40's look, though.

Not the thriller I was expecting, but a wonderful nuanced screenplay. The acting was superb, as is to be expected from two of the greats. There was a patch in the middle of the movie where it seemed like the director was drifting from the plot, but he was actually setting up the sumptuous ending.

Bogart is brilliant in this murder mystery thriller and well complemented by Grahame, who garnered the attention of Hollywood for this performance.

All Time Classic. The highlight is the phenomenal performances by Gloria & Bogie. Whenever they are on screen they sizzle with chemistry, tension, and witty dialogue. The supporting cast is really good also. The music is excellent, the cinematography is excellent with some really creative angles at times, but also knows when to just focus on its two leads and lets them light up the screen. This makes great use of the black and white ascetics. The editing and pacing are excellent also. This merges a Murder Mystery with a Romance Drama perfectly so much so I can't even distinguish which it is sometimes. This always stays focused on either of the two leads as well. This is a sad tale of temperament, lost love, and presumption. This does a great job in the final 15 minutes especially ramping of the tension and making you question if he really did it or not. A testament to Bogarts acting. Everyone should give this a try once.

Decent not his best. Bogart is good but the actress can't act.

THE BOGART SUSPENSE PICTURE WITH THE SURPRISE FINISH! In a Lonely Place is a 1950 American film noir directed by Nicholas Ray πŸŽ₯ It's ok, but I feel mixed about this one πŸ˜‰ I'd recommend it if you like this genre, but if not then probably give it a miss πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘ŽπŸΌ An aspiring actress begins to suspect that her temperamental boyfriend is a murderer.

Brilliance, arrogance, charm and fiery anger. Bogart highlights it all here.

Wow, a dark moody and excellent film. Humprey Bogart aging is awesome and as a writer who accused of murder it's an awesome roll. He brings his signature style but with a elevated presence. The music is perfect, the pacing couldn't be better. The direction and the whole film wow!

Mediocre. I can't say this film does nothing to set its self apart. It has some unique aspects. But in the end it just doesn't say anything, there seems to be no themes, no emotion. Like many noir's it just comes across as bland. Noir geeks will like otherwise its a skip.

Who knew a 1950 film could achieve the depth of character development and the raw honesty of this, Bogart's best film?

Great noir psychological love story. I hadn't heard of it until I saw "Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool." and wanted to something with Gloria Grahame in it. So getting Bogart, Grahame and knockout-good direction was a treat. She was a stunner. Grahame was sultry and realistic (cold back then) which is hard to do unless you've got a good script and direction. I do wish it was longer but the double feature format of the day cut time. Maybe it cut this to its essence and paced it fast with emotions that are intense and changing. Characters show their depth one scene after another.

Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame in a Noir mystery. What more can I say?

Drama, tension, a murder, two suspects, and a violent man who is at the center of it all. An interesting plot with compelling performances. A classic.

In this intriguing masterpiece you will find Humphrey Bogart like you've never seen him before. This is a detailed adaptation of profiling a Killer's personality. Here you have a classic Narcissist with a slightly unhinged temper which slowly emerges as the movie progresses. Even though it is subtle in its depiction every scene develops as it should. Regardless of the films even and slow pace the suspense and mystery lingers all the way until the end. Some things may not be as they appear, all the while the viewer is left to ponder the outcome.

This film is really impressive for the time it was released. It follows a very complicated but ambiguous ❀️ story that is still ambiguous after the film is over. The film is a little boring especially in the middle and it hasn't aged well but it is still interesting for the time it was filmed.

A rude awakening of what the real business of Hollywood was (and probably still is). One of Bogart's stronger performances and a great noir romance.

Nicholas Ray's film works on every level. It's an outstanding psychological drama, love story and biting critique of Hollywood, with great cinematography and a stylish film noir look. Humphrey Bogart is at times mesmerizing, a strange mix of anger, violence, talent, loyalty and vulnerability. In some ways Gloria Grahame's role is even harder than Bogart's, and she plays it beautifully. These are undoubtedly among the finest performances ever for these two actors. After seeing the film I read that Bogart's character is a bit similar to how Bogart was in real life but very similar to Ray himself. That, and the fact that Graham was Ray's wife at the time, may explain how these three got this film so right.
