In & Out Reviews

Oct 4, 2024

An out-and-out comedy. In & Out is a 1997 American comedy film directed by Frank Oz 🏫 It’s good 🙂 Worth a watch. I’d recommend it if you like this genre 👍🏼 S A midwestern teacher questions his sexuality after a former student makes a comment about him at the Academy Awards.

This was such a complete waste of time. I decided to watch after the extremely favorable reviews but was shocked at how silly it was. I could only watch about a third and then put it out of it's misery. The whole stupid premise of this movie was concerning a topic I seldom think about and couldn't care less about. Don't bother with this one.

Definitely a must-watch if you're looking for 90's films with a really good mix of comedy, humor, enlightenment, and entertainment. It's a feel-good movie that leaves you with a smile. Quite entertaining.

Is it better to be in the closet or completely out in the open no matter how much there's to deny? Frank Oz directs Kevin Kline, Matt Dillion, Debbie Reynolds, Bob Newhart, Wilford Brimley, Dan Hedeya, Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Close, Tom Sellick, and Joan Cusack Kline stars as Professor Howard Bracket A former student of his becomes a very successful superstar actor During an awards ceremony he gives a speech and out of the blue declares his professor Howard is actually gay of all things! Howard is distressed by this bombshell and naturally tries to deny it His wife Emily is distraught as are the townfolk and he's scrambling to assert his manliness determined to prove he is straight The film has enough wacky hijinks to tickle the funny bone But for some reason it keeps going and when the focus shifts away from Kline it's a bit distracting But it gives enough in the script for declaring yourself, being part of the LGBTQ community isn't a bad thing or contagious, it's okay to truly be yourself instead of bottling it up, and just learning to love and accept is much easier than to put it aside Keep in mind: the film doesn't always find comfortable ground between broad comedy and social commentary, but lively performances -- especially from Kline and Cusack -- enrich the mixture of laughs and sexual tolerance This could've wrapped up quicker and by todays standards it feels quaint — a time capsule of the late '90s, its prejudices, stereotypes and worth-lampooning gay cliches But it gets points for being satirical as it can be

Stereotyping -- There's nothing wrong with being gay. But this movie shamefully plays on the worn-out stereotype that if a guy likes fashion or musicals or some other activity that's the antithesis of being Mr. Macho, then he must be gay. Most of these myths seem to be spread by guys obsessed with their machoism. They're quick to ridicule any guy who's not a regular beer drinker and always bragging about his sex-capades, and especially any guy who enjoys something only women should like. Unfortunately, too many people buy into this mindset. Beneath it all though, those guys probably have a group-think mindset, and are a bit insecure if some guy isn't part of the herd. If a person is attracted to someone of the opposite sex, they're straight. If they're attracted to someone of the same sex, they're gay. If they're attracted to both, they're bisexual. And it's this sole fact that determines their sexual orientation. Too often, people lose sight of this simple fact.

It's a lighthearted comedy eith great performances by Kevin, Kline, Joan Cusak and Tom Selleck. One of funniest scenes is Kline listening to a "How to be a Man" motivational-type recording and struggling not to dance. This is one if my go-to movies when I want to laugh but not think to much.

It is the first film I remember seeing that tackled homosexuality with compassion and humor, and not judging.

I absolutely love this movie, most of the scenes are laugh out loud funny. It also had a very important message way beyond it's time. Bravo.

a delightful film with genuinely funny jokes and comedy. Kevin Kline is wonderful in the lead role bringing charm and charisma. I don't love this movie like do many other LGBT movies but its worth a watch.

3/2/2019 I'm probably rating this on how it aged a couple of decades after release and enjoyability to watch. A lot of movies from that decade did not age well (ehem, Clueless) but this seems to be a moderate exception. Though the topic seemed to be taken more lightly before than how treatment is done today, some of the punchlines would not be too politically correct in the current time. Nevertheless, as a proud gay man belonging to a loving family, the graduation scene had me tearing up a bit. Kevin Kline was the perfect for this role.

To Come Out Of A Closet With A Laugh. In & Out Oz's light hearted concept that grows into heavy intense dramatic showdown is latter a wakeup call for the society but first a beautifully crafted comic delight. What seems at first as a mere joke and gives away its intention of not taking it seriously proves you wrong later in every frame of the screen. It is calculatively constructed with a fresh to-the-point structure that never takes its material for granted. The emotional aspect of the feature is left upon the concept to fill it in, it just communicates with you, the benign idea that boost off this film has its heart in the right place. On humor, Oz never lets you feel that the gag is forcibly imputed, each well timed punchline makes sense, even the pop culture references, you are practically wolfish for more and more. Out of many sketches that follows the idea of the protagonist wrestling itself on his identity, the best one would be the sort of guide manual tape recording that teaches the protagonist to be a man. Now this part is one big sloppy kiss for both the actors and the writers, the writers hitting all the notes they can on mocking themselves in a spoof and satirical tone while the actor has to draw out as much as laugh he can with physical sequences where he doesn't have to share the screen. I think it gives away the surf on performance record, Kilne as a juggling ball that is juggled by the narrow ideologies of the societies holds up for his role along with Selleck as his supporter. And supporting her is Cusack as the real victim of this entire case- or at least that is what she feels- is a pure delight while delivering her frustration over petty things. In & Out is aptly titled, it doesn't ponder over the usual semantics, it couldn't care less.

Love the pacing of this movie, love Kline's and Cusak's performances, it is hilariously gem-packed, yet the story is more or less forgettable

I watched this film because I wanted something light and not too much demanding. The plot is pretty easy: an emerging actor wins the Oscar and during his acceptance speech he simply says thank to his school teacher, labeling him as gay. The problem is that the teacher is going to get married and his wife-to-be doesn't take it well. It's a shock. The teacher tries to prove he is not gay at all. As I said, the plot is very simple, there are some funny situations, but as a whole this film isn't a masterpiece. For sure the great part of the film is sustained by Kevin Kline who does a remarkable and believable job. Despite it's only an average comedy, it worth to be watched at least one time.

For all its good intentions, good humor, and good performances (especially Kline, whose energy lifts everything around him), the movie is too shallow, too safe, and ultimately too cliché. Queerness here is stripped of all romance and sexuality, instead being reduced to a series of stereotypes, so that by the time the happy resolution comes-a gay Spartacus bit that works better on paper than as the film's actual climax-the film has engaged in too much homophobia to simply wash away and ignore.

I forgot how much fun this 80's classic is. ??

This is a good movie. I wouldn't even recognize Tom Selleck without his mustache. Nice commentary on fly over country.
