I.S.S. Reviews

It doesn't come up with much more than its central theme, but it's an enjoyable B movie in that it's a simple set up, it's convinincly played and directed with enough panache.

While DeBose is impressive, the contrived plot of Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s movie hinges, somewhat preposterously, on rational, highly trained scientific minds devolving overnight into paranoid, murderous maniacs.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 29, 2024

With a modest budget of $14m applied to a concept bursting with potential, the film bides its time sensibly enough, but then screws up every remaining phase of its mission.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 26, 2024

Moderately tense, with too few ideas to qualify as actively cerebral... what the movie does have is a brilliant performance by West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose as biologist and rookie astronaut Kira.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 26, 2024

This high-concept sci-fi thriller set aboard the International Space Station was made... for a relatively paltry $13 million. The results, alas, are ropey visuals, cheap sets and some of the worst zero-G effects in recent space movie history.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 26, 2024

Tense and occasionally disturbing, but somehow you’re left with the nagging suspicion that what should have been a meaty psychological drama has been turned into a slightly insipid thriller instead.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 24, 2024

I like the tension of the narrative... But what they do with that is make a fairly ordinary and pedestrian thriller.

The plot remains within the confines of a B series due to a lack of character complexity and a succession of illogical decisions, director Gabriela Cowperthwaite manages to grant a certain complexity to the cosmonauts presented. [Full review in Spanish]

I.S.S. asks several troubling and unpleasant questions, and the film refuses to make things easy on the audience by smothering them in obvious answers.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 29, 2024

It’s a surprisingly trenchant story for what seems to be a slight genre thriller, but then again, genre thrillers can be the best vessels for these kinds of messages.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 20, 2024

In space, no one can hear you yawn.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jan 19, 2024

With “I.S.S.,” [DeBose] takes a giant leap forward as a solid action hero amid a decently gripping mix of human nature and atomic annihilation.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 19, 2024

It's mostly pretty tense and pretty well-made for a low budget.

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Jan 19, 2024

Despite the gravity of the situation (or lack thereof), the promising idea feels too weightless in the spare, underdeveloped execution, operating at the edges of a good movie without reaching that orbit.

| Jan 19, 2024

It’s odd to think about how these kinds of special effects become so rote and unremarkable so quickly. The movie’s attempts at conflict and intrigue feel just as unremarkable.

The tense, taut space thriller with a spare script and sharp, differentiated performances exposes the overachievers’ battle royal -- who will survive, and to what on earth can they possibly return?

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 19, 2024

It comes with a level of absurdity that no self-respecting cinephile would tolerate in the other 11 months of the year, but could be exactly what you need to dull the pain of a painful NFL playoff loss.

| Original Score: B- | Jan 19, 2024

There are few things more disappointing than a genre movie that forgoes developing its intriguing premise to focus on cheap, failed attempts to thrill.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 19, 2024

It is an efficient thrill ride, running about 90 minutes, with every moment used as effectively as possible.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 19, 2024

Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina excel in this space thriller that sizzles with Russia vs America tension but all too predictably fizzles into a mild ride that is better than you might expect while falling way short of the wonder it so wants to inspire.
