It's Only the End of the World Reviews
It’s Only the End of the World is an emotional, moving film which is as much about end-of-life reflections as it is about failures to communicate.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 13, 2024
Though not to the standard of Dolan's earlier films, it makes for engaging viewing... especially if you like watching people scream at each other.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 2, 2021
The only interesting part of the film is Dolan's choice of music cues, and that's more for their oddness than their quality.
| Original Score: C- | Aug 24, 2021
The film portrays a clichéd view of family dysfunction that is neither as revealing nor profound enough to maintain interest.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 1, 2021
Only Dolan's stand-in -Gaspard Ulliel- survives this smorgasbord of overacting, mostly by staying quiet.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Jan 28, 2020
However, there is not enough poignancy in the film to make it shine past similar dysfunctional family dramas.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 13, 2019
It's an extraordinary film in many ways, but unusually for Dolan, the bad more often than not outweighs the good.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 6, 2019
It's stunning, stylised and intense, conveying the characters' histories, their memories, sadness and maybe love.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 19, 2018
It remains an interesting and arresting film whose sound and fury may cloud some very good work.

Dolan has not lost a bit of his talent... [Full review in Spanish]

Blood is supposedly thicker than water, but blood doesn't sustain a conversation, and neither blood nor love can fill the chasm that results from something as low-key as a lack of connection.

It's Only the End of the World, though not a disaster, will be for many a disappointment.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 28, 2017
Only Marion Cotillard catches the eye in this unrewarding subtitled production.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 17, 2017
This pumped-up chamber drama feels like Dolan's stab at a Bergman movie, and it's predictably all cries and no whispers, with a few especially egregious sequences and a final shot with laughably pat symbolism.

A stellar cast of French actors is mainly left to run lines and hyperventilate in Xavier Dolan's turgid yet occasionally affecting melodrama.

While Dolan's previous film Mommy (2014) was hailed a masterpiece, somehow his follow-up, for me at least, doesn't live up to that kind of hype. It's not exactly surprising that the critical reaction so far has been mixed to say the least.

Beyond a few gripping, throat-in-mouth scenes, driven by Cassel's ferocity, the movie never really gets you to believe that these people belong to the same family and aren't just actors pretending.

It's not, as the mockery goes, the end of the world for Dolan, but it's hardly something we wish to remember this golden boy by, either.
| Mar 17, 2017
Plenty of emotion-dripping French family drama and eye-catching visuals to enjoy.
| Mar 13, 2017
It's Only the End of the World is a familial drama with emotions pitched to hysterical levels, and it's quite a trial to spend 97 minutes in its presence.
