J. Edgar Reviews

By the end, we don’t understand Hoover any more than we did when the film began.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 6, 2023

File under fascinating, but seriously flawed.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 2, 2023

An exquisitely made piece.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Nov 30, 2020

A well done biopic featuring a couple of fine performances from DiCaprio and Hammer.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 12, 2020

Not even Clint Eastwood behind the camera or Leonardo DiCaprio's powerful portrayal is enough to prevent the colossal failure this film exhibits. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 24, 2020

Looking portly and tortured by his feelings of self-doubt and a need for approval, DiCaprio delivers a magnificent performance.

J. Edgar is overlong yet provocatively challenging.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 11, 2019

Although the film is suffocated somewhat by its solemnity, and it's hard to ascertain Eastwood's take on his subject, you can't really quibble with its realisation.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 31, 2019

A gripping and fascinating film, humming with an electric undercurrent of sexual tension that is something of a new territory for Eastwood.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 6, 2019

It devolves into "Life of Hoover: The Greatest Hits."

J. Edgar is moving and informative, but more often, it seems trapped between wanting to illuminate and wanting to be discreet.

| Original Score: B- | Feb 8, 2019

[J. Edgar Hoover] is brought to life... by DiCaprio, in a surprisingly mature performance.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 5, 2019

Underwhelming performances, a lacklustre script and a pervading sense of drudgery prohibits J. Edgar from ever being truly engaging.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 13, 2018

The acting is wonderful, as one would expect, but the story lacks punch.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Nov 21, 2018

Dominating almost every scene, DiCaprio is an extremely attractive actor, but while perfectly capable of projecting Hoover's occasionally nutty side, he has far too much leading-man charm to make an audience shudder.

| Nov 5, 2018

The director openly displays the protagonist's defects, but also his impressive intelligence... [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 8, 2018

Eastwood's sure-handed direction, Black's time-shifting storytelling and the stellar performances make "J. Edgar" worth watching.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 8, 2018

... contradictory to the point of incoherence.

| Mar 5, 2018

Unfortunately the make-up on DiCaprio and Armie Hammer's elder J. Edgar and Clyde was distractingly awful, so in the end, I guess the dress-up feel to the film couldn't be avoided.

Not even Leo in top form can stop you clock-watching during this lengthy biopic.
