Jade Reviews
This one is rough. In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Cal (Seth Rogan) advises Andy (Steve Carrell) that the key to seduction is “Pretend you’re David Caruso in Jade.” Ever since I heard that line almost 20 years ago, this movie has been at the back of my mind. I got none of that here. A contrived plot with all the usual suspects — corrupt politicians (Richard Crenna), slimy lawyers (Chazz Palminteri), and a detective playing by his own rules (David Caruso) — is filled with nonsensical car chase scenes and milquetoast “eroticism”. In Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F., the destructive car chase scene at least had a tinge of 1990s nostalgia to it, but here, it’s sincere and just stupid. Our good guy, ADA David Corelli (Caruso) causes more destructive chasing… someone than is even tangentially reasonable. This has to be one of my most loathed movie tropes. Jade fails because it is not thrilling (despite the intriguing beginning, a tone of which is abandoned thereafter) and is not erotic. In the end, I was left asking myself, “What did I just watch?”. Friedkin is a master, but not in this one.
The plot was contrived, arbitrary, and a disappointment from director William Friedkin and writer Joe Eszterhas who wrote Basic Instinct which was a better movie than Jade.
An ambitious San Francisco public defender becomes inveigled in the kinky murder of a local businessman. From the pen of Joe Eszterhaus, still chipping at the block of mental marble that gave us Basic Instinct and Showgirls. So there's some great purple dialogue - few can make a euphemism for genitalia land harder. What gets missed is Eszterhaus's fondness for heroes whose lack of self-awareness verges on stupidity and his sneaking regard for the femme fatale. Once governor Richard Crenna gets in the picture via some incriminating photos, there's also a heavy Clinton/Vince Foster vibe. Director William Friedkin zeroes in on this with an elephant gun, all the while thwarting any real "eroticism" in this erotic thriller via videotape snow and the dampening of animal passions by the Frisco fog. David Caruso is a ginger void, while Linda Fiorentino makes a four-course meal in her role as a thrill-seeking headshrinker. And because this is Friedkin, we get a car chase that only is pipped by Bullitt as the finest to ever be staged in the Bay Area.
I love the music and editing, the cast is good too.
linda fiorentino was great. I love her
it is very 90's but it is still good. I love its cinematography and score.
William Friedkin, you will be deeply missed. Jade is an underrated gem
Not sure why all the bad reviews, this was a solid flick and looks great!
For the first half or so, Friedkin makes this very 90's crime procedural significantly better than a standard episode of Law and Order however the script ultimately forces the film to peter out in it's uninvolving resolution. Does have a great cast.
Woeful at everything it tries to do.
There were a lot of psychological / erotic thrillers in 90's. Most were like Basic Instinct or The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Both critics and audience were fed up watching the same film with different cast. Jade was written by Joe Eszterhas who also wrote Basic Instinct and Showgirls ( in 1995 ) and received golden raspberry for Showgirls.. Therefore Jade was bound to be D.O.A. Jade has great cast and a fabulous director William Friedkin. James Horner's score and Loreena McKennitth's song called Mystic's Dream fit in the film's mood and make it really atmospheric. Jade is a visually gorgeous film. 94 mins great entertainment is guaranteed
Jade is very underrated. Critics rubbished the film back then because it was very similar to Basic Instinct. Although they were partially right, William Friedkin's vision and approach to the subject matter was totally different than Paul Verhoeven's. Cinematography and score are amazing. Loreena Mckennit's Mystic's Dream is a bonus and completes the film's mood
Really isn't that bad if you like high production quality combined with low quality writing. It's trash but enjoyable scene chewing trash.
When William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) is good he is off the charts, but when he is bad you'd rather watch paint dry. And unfortunately, he is the latter with Jade. Director William Friedkin has created a stylistic picture, but this is an example of style without substance. In the French Connection, Friedkin oversaw one of the great chase sequences in screen history. There's a chase scene in Jade, too, but it's far from the same class. Repetitious and tedious, this stretches for the better part of ten minutes and concludes with a highly-anticlimactic splash. Maybe if there had been an underwater camera at this point, we would have seen a few of those red herrings swimming around. The story is also a set of clichés: We've seen this story before -- many, many times. There's the sexy femme fatale, the hard- nosed husband, and the generally-likable investigative sort who's looking into the killing of a high-profile rich guy with important ties.
"I want you to be David Caruso in Jade." - 40 Year Old Virgin This movie is pretty underrated. Caruso and Chazz P are both excellent and Fiorentino plays a good floozy. Some solid car chases coupled with David Caruso Driving Face and you've got yourself an excellent 90 minutes on NetFlix.
Admittedly I overlooked this, but upon rewatch the real weaknesses I only see are the slightly confusing plot and the ending which just isn't that good.
Yes this film has faults...I cant deny that but I enjoy it for what it is. I do prefer the directors cut as feel the conclusion is better. I am a fan of Friedkin. The Exorcist, Sorceror and To Live and Die In La are 3 of my favourite films. The car chase is suspenseful and enjoyable. I like it more than Basic Instinct
Decent thriller that could have been much better if the script would have been better fleshed out, Jade is one of those films which has good ideas and plenty of potential in being a good film, but it never becomes anything truly riveting or memorable. Jade could have been quite good if the film's script would have been better though out, and it's a shame that this is such a tiresome, lazy affair. The cast are fairly ridiculous in their roles and in turn, it doesn't do much to make this film really standout. Jade plays out like a low budget film and it has that feel to it as well. If you're looking for something good here, then you'll be disappointed as the film never becomes anything truly entertaining. Overall it is amusing, but it could have been much better as well, and leaves a lot to be desired in terms of good storytelling. The Exorcist director William Friedkin directs and he makes one of his least accessible works here. Jade is amusing at best for its camp value and to me it felt like a cheap wanabe Basic Instinct film, but it failed due to a lack of original ideas and good performances. If you enjoy low budget affairs, then Jade is worth seeing, but even then don't go into this one expecting a highly entertaining film, it's one of those films that tries to be something great, but never gets there due to too many script limitations. Jade is worth seeing only once and doesn't demand multiple viewing due to its sheer ridiculous acting and lack of immersive storytelling.
