Excellent film in every way... The awkwardness between cultures was carefully and skillfully portrayed by the scrip and two actors. Toni was brilliant. Myself as an American having working in neisi..Japanese American culture for 10 years I was very impressed with the awkwardness portrayed. The sensitivity of the wife toward Toni thru the pictures was very touching and such a tribute to Japanese culture. The character of Toni was forever changed and a scene at the end was evident in her new relationship with her mother to whom she gave the address of the wife. Good photography and much silence and little dialogue was excellent. Amazing film directed and written by women. Excellent

Brilliant moving unexpected

At first glance, Sue Brooks' Japanese Story appears to be an infusion of genre stories: man versus nature, a road trip, and a mismatched romance. However, while there are elements of each ingredient in the movie, Brooks and screenwriter Alison Tilson want the finished product to be a deeper and richer mixture than one might anticipate from considering its parts. In fact, this is not an outback adventure story, but a character piece. Japanese Story looks at isolation and the fragility of human relationships. It's a poignant, unsettling motion picture that will baffle those who have become used to Hollywood's compact, tidy endings. This Australian indie should be on your watchlist.(A fascinating tale on the outback).

May I just say I have never seen anything like this. Not much dialogues, not much verbal communications, everything was said through actors' expressions, especially their eyes. I love the soundtracks! It made me cry. I wish the guy didnt die, yet, I don't know if the movie will be as deep and touching as it is, if he didnt. Th death was totally unexpected for a rom-com. I loved how this couples are opposites attract. I don't like that the guy is married and never told her.Great cast, great acting, not too sincere when it comes to language corrections or English teachings. All the other bird view shots, the shots during their sex scenes are beautiful!

Life is unpredictable

Just a straight up dreadful movie. If I see Toni Collette cry once more I'll send her some Valium in the post. The deeply monotonous score only reinforces the boredom. I was filled with hate after this movie, for the actors, the directors the writers and everyone responsible for assaulting my soul with this piece of shit film. Dont watch it.

Weird and Unappealing.

Challenging yet provocative movie

Aug 3, 2015

A small movie with a big heart, anchored by Collette's monumental performance & stunning photography. A slow start gives way to shocking plot twist that propels the film's existential sensibility.

A powerful film about both the power and ultimately helpless nature of being human. Toni Collette and Gotaro Tsunashima offer painfully realistic performances that carry more weight that is not fully realized until the credits begin to role.

Slow-moving and a little odd.

Poignant film that showcases Collette's great range of talents, as well as the beauty of the Australian desert, to show qualities that cross the culture gap.

Japanese Story was, at times, hard to relate to. It seemed that the depth of her emotions did not match up to the situation at hand. However, there was beauty to the movie as well. You begin to see how the relationship between Sandy and Tachibana grows into a companionship, and although it doesn't seem to be love, they certainly care about each other. They look past the language barrier and rely on their senses to carry them along. The film was exploding with nonverbal cues, and had it not been, it would have been absolutely terrible. The sex scene, for example, created the idea that they could communicate in ways other than speaking. This film was not one I would probably leisurely watch in my free time, but I do think it was well made and well executed.

This movie had the potential to become a great movie, but it needs more development. It is an incredibly slow movie that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Based on the plot summary, it isn't clear how the person who wrote the plot summary got that from the movie itself. There needs to be some clearer context, clearer dialog, and an all over faster paced movie. However, the nonverbal communication was great.

Toni Collette is wonderful: emotional range, plausibility. She carries the movie but is ably assisted by cast, and subtle direction. Better than the Tomatometer says.

Well.. that was unexpected....

A promising idea, and superficially looks the part too. Sadly the script is weak and the on-screen chemistry lacking. Disappointing.
