Jodorowsky's Dune Reviews

Dec 26, 2024

Jodorowsky's Dune (2013). Someone should make the fan film to YouTube with the appearance of the actors considered, through artificial intelligence when the technology is perfected. Or with the appearance of Moebius' drawings. It is about the recruitment of talents to create the film. "I raping Frank Herbert... With love." It is not known if all that is said is true but it is entertaining. The passion for the project, the spiritual warriors and the supposed influence on Hollywood films. What I did not like was the joy for the commercial failure of Dune (1984) because I like the film. The best possible version of Frank Herbert's Dune would be the extended version by David Lynch with the death of Thufir Hawat and other unused scenes so that the cut would only last 2 hours 16 minutes, that cut would be better than the three Dune films made to date. But the very cretin Lynch does not want to make his Director's cut. The film Dune (1984) is also superior in the cast, the quotes from the film, the soundtrack, the costume designs, it has more imagination (you see Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam bald and the Harkonnens are all redheads), to the two films by Denis Villeneuve Dune: Part One (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), based on the book by Frank Herbert Dune (1965).

Quite interesting work on a film that was never made, but influenced an entire genre. All the artists who contributed to the effort were geniuses in their own fields. Happily, their work is used for many science fiction films thereafter.

This is such a heartbreaking and incredibly sad story for fans of Jodorowsky but the movie tells the story well. RIP Jodorowsky's Dune, the greatest movie never made.

Maybe the greatest film never made

This shows one of the most creative endeavors from a visionary who lacked the support to develop what would have been a timeless masterpiece.

I think a lot of the "what ifs?" are entirely unrealistic and to claim that all the major studios passed on the film because they were afraid of Jodorowsky's ideas is pretty ridiculous (it was probably just because of money) but I suppose it's easy to get nostalgic for an idea as great and insane as this was. Whether or not Jodorowsky would have "changed the world" with this film is debatable, but I don't think anyone can disagree that we were denied something that would have been totally unique.

It is said a man will come and find in the gift of Dune his inward eye. He will look where we cannot...

"I needed a really fat guy to play this evil character who floats around because he's just too darn fat to exist otherwise. So ... Orson Welles." That's not a direct quote, but it's not far off either. While Jodorowsky himself is kind of a trash person (flashes of that insanity actually show up in the documentary, alongside the grautitous worship from all sides) and there might be some leaps when talking about the level of practical influence the failed Dune actually had on later projects, this exploration of an unmade science fiction epic is still quite the experience as a retrospective. Production members showing a clear passion for the project (if, surprisingly, not for the source material, which was commonly skipped over, or 'raped' as Jodorowsky enthusiastically put it) with decades of time to reflect and contemplate beyond simple disappointment and anger combines with genuinely interesting and distinctive material. It's not so much a dissection of the creative process as it is a testament to the power of personality and emotional investment, and a story about finding inspiration in failure. Someday, computers will advance to the point where the collection of crazy storyboards and very specific actors will be translated into as faithful a recreation as can be made. And then people will realize that maybe this insane man wasn't going to deliver the world to the promised land of sci-fi quite like everyone thought. (3.5/5)

Alejandro Jodorowsky is a man of singular vision and enthusiasm. This film is an eye-opening look at his talents and drive, both stratospherically high. He is an artist first and foremost, not beholden to anyone or anything but his own vision. It is a breath of fresh air to encounter him, and an honor to share the earth with him, never mind his towering ego. At least he has always dreamed huge, and for that there is no substitute.

With an imagination and personality as enormous as Alejandro Jodorowski's, it's easy to imagine the scope, bizarre visuals, and groundbreaking thematic impact this would-be sci-fi classic would have created, as well as feel an inspiration for more in the future.

Every fan of Frank Herbert's epic science fiction book, Dune, must see this film. In fact, every fan of epic science-fiction films of the late 20th and early 21st century should see this film and understand how Alejandro Jodorsky's creation of Dune influenced this genre.

WOW, how did we missed that adaptation?!? Stupid industry, what were you thinking??? Must see movie, if only we've could turn back time...

An amazing documentary of the most influential 🎥 to be canceled.

Surprisingly good. After about the first 15 minutes, I didn't see that it was going to retain my interest but I was very wrong.

It is impressive to see what would have been of a situated in pre-Star Wars space with 2001 Odyssey as the only precedent. It is unfair to think of compare the potential of both projects on the screen, considering the times and circumstances of both projects, but now we can only wait for the Denis Villeneuve's version at the end of this year.

Highly interesting breakdown of Jodorowsky's plans, schemes, and struggles to make what might have been the most remarkable sci-fi film ever. Yeah, he's a bit self-righteous and overt in his concept of what the film was meant to express. Also, it's easy to play the devoted uber-auteur who no interest in financial gain, only great art, saying money is 'nothing', 'crap', when you have a huge wad in your pocket. But, as they say, I digress. Giger makes another appearance as a key figure in the design of parts of the film as he did in the Alien documentary, along with Foss, Pink Floyd, Welles, Dali together with Herbert's story, Jodorowsky's ideas and direction, could've (and apparently did, to some extent as there is a cut of the film) been phenomenal. 3.7 stars

Quite interesting.. and sad it never got made!!

The world is so unfair! Jodorowsky was too stuborn to make the film, so everyone must stroke him for his "effort". the truth is, All he had was a few Geiger sketches.

Amazing opportunity to glance at what has to be the most ambitious unmade movie in the history of science fiction (Moebius! Giger! Dali! Welles! Pink Floyd! And, of course, Jodorowsky himself), featuring engaging interviews with plethora of creators and other people from the industry alike. Most notably with Jodorowsky, whose weird spanish-english way of speaking make him even more prophet-like and us, the audience, more eager to listen to him.
