Johnny Mnemonic Reviews

Sep 14, 2024

One of the very worst movies I've seen, and I've seen "Forever Young" (1992) so I know what I'm talkin' about.

It's one of my favorite movies of all time. It's ambitious, naive, a little cheap at times but the movie world is totally wild and you have these awesome actors Keanu reeves, ice T, Takeshi Kitano to make it believable. If only I could watch it for the first time again

Obviously Gibson's ideas simmering within the movie are extremely interesting and I do like the movie's aesthetic however the exposition is so horrendously handled and the central performances are so bad that those good elements hardly matter.

For me it was just too weird and silly.

Before Elysium there was this film, a man has the key to save millions of lives AND ITS ALL STUCK IN HIS HEAD.

This is a very cool movie and ahead of its time. A film like this would probably be much more successful with today's audiences as both the technology and cyberpunk genre have caught up. Dolph Lundgren has some acting chops which he shows off in this movie. It's edgy, ultra violent, and now that we're a very tech savvy bunch, probably more appealing than when it originally debuted. 83/100 B

Eye have to say, it's a beautiful piece of work. In hindsight of the absurdity of some of the shoddy dialogue in the beginning, the way it conceptualizes a cyberpunk world, well it's good apart from some of the straight contrasts it makes. It's entertaining in the sense that it keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat, but also makes the viewer want to pull back with minor absurdities that it should be said aren't reflective of the entire film, but do it no favour either. More could be said, but simply put, it's a quality cyberpunk dystopia made at a time when VCR was the future.

This movie get its rating for how it predicts 2021 would be. Not saying it's the best, but not the worst.

Great movie: clever script, great acting, a message that seemed farfetched at the time but that's very appropriate today.

Great movie , the movie was envisioned in 1995 , when internet was not main stream and many of the concepts which movie explores were too much to absorb by Movie goers. The movie shows you glimpses of future what will be surfing on net , video tele conferencing , VR User interface. The movie even talks about Wireless waves impacting human and impact of Technology on Humans. In 1994-1995 most people did not had computer With that stated the movie deserves a Second viewing , specially if you viewed it first time in 90's and now you would be able to understand many concepts explained in movie. For most people who are Technology savvy the movie is a master piece

Never saw it when it first came out, was it considered any good back then?

This movie is a masterpiece and predicted exactly how technology will evolve in 2021 and beyond

Perfect ridiculous, over the top 90's movie. Great to watch with a group of friends with some drinks.

Fantastic classic made in 1995 when internet wasn't popular, based in 2021. Got a lot wrong but also got a lot right. Quite enjoyable. 😁

Definitely a "So Bad It's Good" movie. (Minimal spoilers) Narratively, it's a complete mess and adds so much unnecessary content to the William Gibson short story it's based on while simultaneously cutting some of its best aspects (Molly Millions, the mirror-eyed street samurai, one of the coolest characters in scifi history, is replaced with a wet fish romantic interest). HOWEVER, fragments of Gibson's terrific world are still there. For example, the movie's grueling style and unique concepts are definitely interesting, from a cybernetic dolphin that's addicted to heroin to the world of cyberspace (even though cyberspace didn't play a major roll in the source material, but oh well). But despite the cool-ness that survived from the source material, nearly everything the movie added is completely useless. Most plot devices from the original short story are doubled for some reason; like there are two mysterious assassins chasing the main characters that serve the exact same purpose narratively, and two exposition dumping characters even though they could've easily been condensed into one. The simple short story of "Johnny pisses off the Yakuza by selling data and runs away from a ninja" turns into "Johnny has the cure for cyber cancer and wants to save the world, but 5 unrelated parties are chasing him for some reason... plus a ninja"—if that sums up how much they didnt need to add. Though, there is some good that comes out of the bad: The acting is BAD and the dialogue is worse. Even the good actors aren't given much to work with and somehow fall flat... but there's just something so funny about it. Keanu is hilariously bad in this movie, something that makes every scene with him in it shine—maybe not in the way they wanted, but it shines nonetheless. ("But that's a fish!!" is something I can't help but say whenever I see a dolphin around my family). And don't get me started on the random preacher dude who shows up out of nowhere... Basically, if you're watching this movie as a fan of William Gibson's Sprawl franchise and are excited to see it on screen, make sure to bring a bag of wheelbarrow for your disappointment. But if you're watching this with friends and go in with the mindset of laughing at it, it's a very enjoyable movie.

Watch the other Johnny movie...

Very interesting to watch in 2021 when the plot take place. 25 years later, it surprise how accurately this film does predict some, if not all, of today's world; like looking into a crystal ball

This was an ⅛ of an hour ahead of time...I would suggest watching this to witness Keanu Reeve's squall in his movie past...
